No virtual memory / paging file
I upgraded to the beta from Vista. In Vista, I never had any memory related problems. Since starting with the beta, I began getting out of memory errors. I looked into it, and realized that for some reason, there is no longer any paging file in use. The problem is that I can't do anything to get the paging file activated. I go into the Virtual Memory dialog box in the control panel, and I see that the "Automatically manage paging file size..." box is cleared, and each of my hard drives has a Paging File Size of "None". No matter *what* options I select here - whether I tell it to automatically manage, whether I tell it various custom sizes for the paging files on different drives, no matter what I do, when I reboot, everything is back to the way it was, with no paging files in use. I've ensured that I'm running an administrator account, and I tried manually putting values into the registry, but this still doesn't help. Any help would be appreciated!

I've not experienced this and I'm not seeing any other posts. It sounds as though, for some reason, your installation went wrong. I would re-do with a clean install if I were you.Good luck.

Can you boot into safe mode and delete the C:\pagefile.sys and c:\hyberfil.sys? Then try configuring it again.Joe

I booted into safe mode, but searching my hard drive, I apparently have no pagefile.sys file or hyberfil.sys files, either in the root directory or elsewhere. I went back into the configuration, hoping it would work in safe mode - told it to make the pagefile "system managed", it told me I would have to reboot, then when I clicked ok / ok, it told me to reboot. I rebooted, but still back to square one - going back to that configuration section, I see that there's still no page file, and checking my hard drive, I see no pagefile.sys.So - any idea how I can go about creating the pagefile.sys file? Thanks!

In your previous Vista installation, did you keep the paging file on a separate drive/partition from the system volume? This behavior has been reported several times and this plus an upgrade install seems to be common factors.Let us know. I do have two hard drives, C: and D:, with C: being my primary drive, but in Vista, I don't recall ever messing around with the paging file, so I'm assuming that it was the default setup.

More info - I tried to create a page file manually in a directory on the C drive by specifying the directory in the registry - but still no luck.It looks like a temporary page file is being created each time - but I don't see where on the HD the temporary file is - and if I delete the TempPageFile entry in the registry, it just reappears after the next reboot, saying TempPageFile with a value of 1. But if I go into the virtual memory settings, it's showing no page file.

Just an update - after days of researching the issue, I think it does in fact have to do with the way the Win 7 upgrade modified my permissions (though I had never had permission problems in Vista), but I tried a ton of different methods to fix things up, with no success. So - I did a new clean install of Windows 7, and now everything works great, with the pagefile being handled properly. So the problem definitely lies with the upgrade, as opposed to a clean install.I'll admit that the clean install process went very smoothly, and with more and more of the apps I use being "in the cloud", reinstalling the apps I needed ended up being much less of a hassle than I expected, and I should have gone this route originally. Thanks!
