I got a BSOD. and then when it rebooted, it gave me one Black screen with NO User names.Though it showed the shutdown menu on the bottom right & accessibility toolbar button on the bottom left. I rebooted in the safe mode but no user names still on the screen. I even did System Restore but still the same situation.And now I cant login. I tried pressing Ctlr+Alt+Del twice (as I do in XP to get the traditional login box) but to no avail.Any way I can login into system once?And why did this black screen happen. Any ideas?

Why did it happen? No idea; however, you may be able to fix it. Boot with the Windows 7 DVD. At the first screen, hit <shift><f10> to enter the WinPE command prompt. If you done a clean load, then your Windows installation will probably located on the D drive within the WinPE environment. To double-check, type d: followed by cd windows\system32. If that was successful, good. If not, see below for more instructions. At the WinPE command prompt environment type copy x:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe d:\windows\system32. Choose yes to overwrite the existing file. Exit the command prompt and reboot. If your windows installation is not at the D drive from within the WinPE environment, close the command prompt and enter the recovery area. At the top of the recovery selection screen, you will see the drive letter where your Windows 7 installation resides. Do the above procedures substituting your windows installation drive for what I have shown in the above example. If that fails to fix your issue, you may have to do an in-place reinstall to fix.

Darien, Thanks for the response. I am not sure if that would have resolved the issue. Anyways, I somehow managed to fix it! I went to the Repair computer section and selected Resolve Startup issues. It searched for few minutes but it didn't fix the issue. As it could find a Valid Boot (i got to the login screen, so that meant a boot was proper). This time I tried a trick, while machine was booting and showing the glowing Windows icon, i did a hard switch off of my laptop. And then when I restarted, it itself recommended me to search for Startup issues. I selected. While it was scanning, it seems to have found out some issues and prompted me to System Restore, I denied as it didn't work before. It then tried to Attempt Recovery. It took 15-20 minutes and when it rebooted...Voila! All was normal! I don't know what caused it, still thankfully I am back! Thanks for your response anyways.

Hi Glad you were able to get this fixed and thank you for letting us know the details. One thing I have noticed with the Startup Repair component is that it can be cumulative. I recently worked on a system that had similar problems, booting to a black screen. I have almost the same problem - after uninstalling the Daemon tools v3.16 i have only two "users" on the logon screen - the last accesed and "Another user" button. No idea on how to fix :(

I had the same issue. Issues occurred after I closed the lid of my PC, It went into sleep mode. Subsequently the PC lost power. Upon reboot, the computer restarted normally but the logon screen showed no user icons. The shutdown, restart button in the lower right functioned correctly, the accessibility tools in the lower let functioned correctly including the onscreen keyboard. Ctrl+Alt+Del did nothing. Performed f8 recovery. Correct startup issued did not solve the issue. None of the available system restores solved the problem. Followed directions above, interupting power during startup, performing recomended recovery when prompted, canceled system restore prompt, waited 10 min while the wizard did it's thing. The system restartes and user icons were back. The only unusual event logs mention the WUDFPf service was not found and failed to load.

Hi all I've managed to fix the "No users on the login screen" issue with Kevin's help here! So I hereby confirm that forcing Windows 7 to perform the recovery will result in fixing this problem on the next restart. Thanks! Dan
