No such interface supported (0x80004002) error when creating a system image or doing a backup
Hello, I am encountering an error which prevents me from using Windows 7 Backup / Create a System Image. When I click on those options I get the following error message: "The backup application could not start due to an internal error: No such interface supported (0x80004002)." Dialog below pops up: I checked the backup service as well as the shadow copy service and both are running, I also set them to automatically start. However this problem still persists. Note that I could also write/save files to all my hard drives. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 from MSDN. Thanks!

Hi,We have not seen this error earlier. Can you please elaborate as in:1. What all is included in the backup.2. When does this error come, as in just after the start or some time later. Please send the backup logs located under <systemdrive>\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup\*.etl files to help us investigate further. Zip this folder and send it across to nehaa_at_microsoft_dot_com (Remove underscores and replace words with symbols wherever applicable). Thanks,Neha[MSFT]

Hi Neha, Thanks for your response. The dialog basically popped up everytime I tried to use the functions "Create a system image" or "Set up a backup" to set up a backup for the 1st time. I was actually trying to create an image of my install so I don't have to install the OS and the apps again from scratch in case a problem occurs. Unfortunately, I will not be able to send you the files you are requesting as I decided to nuke the original install over the weekend and start all over... making sure "Create an image" and "set up backup" dialogs launching properly every time I installed a new application. I created an incremental image for every app or two I installed just to be sure. I also made sure image restore works by restoring from one of the image I created. I was not able to reproduce the "0x80004002" issue on my new install. The only thing different is that in my original install I think I did 2 system restores because the utilities I installed for the motherboard I am using (Gigabyte P55-UD4P) were not working properly in x64 mode.

Please temporary disable the antivirus and run backup again. If the issue still occurs, please check the following policy. Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\Backup\Client\Turn off the ability to create a system image Please make sure that this policy is Disabled or Not Configured. If the above suggestions do not help, you may need to do In-place Upgrade to repair the system.
