No sounds from desktop when locked.

When I set my display to turn off after 'x' minutes with the power options then windows 8.1 puts the computer into lock. When it is in lock mode then I cannot hear any sounds from the desktop, no IM alerts, no music from WMP, ect. I still hear sounds from the Metro UI but I don't use it for all of my computing.

I have disabled lock screen via a reg edit so when I bring the computer back(pressing any key) it takes me directly to my desktop, but I still don't receive sound while its locked.

The PC is a Asus Transformer T100 running Windows 8.1

Yes I know I could just set it so the display doesn't turn off, but why should I have to sacrifice my battery life on Windows 8.1 when Windows 7 could do it without any issues?

Maybe it is power saving settings. Go to the device manager, and on the properties of the soundcard, search for power management.

Ok I went in and disabled all of the power saving things on the soundcard and it still acted the same.

When I get an IM and it plays the sound alert, it wont play the sound until I unlock the PC. At that point it plays it. As if it caches the sound until the PC is unlocked.

In Windows 8 I don't have this issue, at least not on my Dell Latitude E6420. It clearly gives me the option to turn the display off in the normal power saving options. In 8.1 it is only available in the 'advanced' options. And when the display turns off I no longer get ANY sound from my desktop.

Hi,

no IM alerts, no music from WMP, ect. I still hear sounds from the Metro UI but I don't use it for all of my computing.

Did you mean that no sounds from all desktop programs? Regarding to the IM alerts, what is the app youre using? And sounds from Metro UI, what apps that you referred to?

Have you turned off the lock screen notification in Change PC settings> Search and apps.

I also suggest you update or just reinstall the audio driver for a test.

Regards,

Yolanda
