No sound
I recently upgraded my compaq presario from xp to windows seven and I get no sound. I've tried everything and still no sound. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Go to your desktop and right-click on Computer. Select Manage Scroll down to Device Manager Look for any devices with a red X or yellow ! on them If your sound device has one of these marks, you will need to update your sound drivers
This can be done by visiting the Compaq website and going to 'Support and Driver downloads'.
...also, make sure to plug in and turn on your speakers. ;)If you found this post helpful, please give it a "Helpful" vote. If it answered your question, remember to mark it as an "Answer".

You may need soundcard drivers that weren't included in the Windows 7 installation.
If you posted the exact model of your PC, someone might be able to help you find them.

Compaq does not support using Windows 7 on your laptop as it appears to be very old. I would suggest either reinstalling XP or Vista, as they are both supported by Compaq on that laptop.

The latest sound drivers that I see at HP for that laptop are for XP. They are for a "Conexant CX20551HD High Definition Audio" device.
I haven't found Windows 7 (or Vista) drivers for that chip, but they may be available. It's possible that HP has them, for a newer model of laptop. I'm sort of surprised that the Windows installation, or Windows Update, haven't produced drivers for it.
Does the sound device show up in Device Manager?

Vista drivers usually work OK in WIn7 try them and see.

Yes, the sound device shows up in Device Manager. Can I just reinstall xp and the sound will come back?

Yes.
You would probably need to download and install the drivers, though.

Looking at the Conexant site, they havent7t produced drivers more recent than XP for this chipset they must have abandoned support.
