Go to your desktop and right-click on Computer. You may need soundcard drivers that weren't included in the Windows 7 installation. If you posted the exact model of your PC, someone might be able to help you find them.

Compaq does not support using Windows 7 on your laptop as it appears to be very old. I would suggest either reinstalling XP or Vista, as they are both supported by Compaq on that laptop. The latest sound drivers that I see at HP for that laptop are for XP. They are for a "Conexant CX20551HD High Definition Audio" device. I haven't found Windows 7 (or Vista) drivers for that chip, but they may be available. It's possible that HP has them, for a newer model of laptop. I'm sort of surprised that the Windows installation, or Windows Update, haven't produced drivers for it. Does the sound device show up in Device Manager?
