No previous versions available on share
Hi, we have a new and interesting problem: We use Windows Server 2003, 2008 (R2) and Windows 7 and have Shadow Copies enabled on all servers/necessary partitions. Also DFS is configured on our File Servers and Shadow Copies are also enabled for the DFSRoots folders Some days ago users noticed that they can't access previous versions (PV) of many folders, although they are accessible on the server, so we started trouble shooting. Folder structure (\\server) - D:\data is shared as "data"! D:\data\main D:\data\main\sub1 D:\data\main\sub2 D:\data\direct DFS structure (\\domain.local\dfs): main\ -> dfs folder main\sub1 -> dfs folder with target main\sub2 -> dfs folder with target direct -> dfs folder with target First I tried a connection between Win7 and Server 2008 (R2) (domain user as well as domain admin; testet with DFS servers and non-DFS servers): \\domain.local\dfs\direct -> PV empty \\domain.local\dfs\main -> PV exist \\domain.local\dfs\sub1 -> empty \\domain.local\dfs\sub12 -> empty \\server\data\main -> empty \\server\data\main\sub1 -> empty \\server\data\main\sub2 -> empty \\server\d$\data\main -> exist \\server\d$\data\main\sub1 -> exist \\server\d$\data\main\sub2 -> exist Then I tried a connection between Win7 and Server 2003: Same test case - PV work! Finally between servers (2003 -> 2008, 2008 -> 2003, 2008 -> 2008): PV work Summarized: Issue seems to exist between Win7 clients and Server 2008 servers Accessing the folders by the volume share works Accessing by DFS does only work when a DFS folder is chosen that has no folder target configured (but sub folders), but I think i found the reason for this: As long the user moves in the DFS folder structure the DFS root (C:\DFSRoots\) is used as source for PV, but once the user tries to access a folder target the specified network share/target path is used So, to my mind the problem limits to a combination of Win7, Windows Server 2008 and network shares, but finally I don't know who to resolve it

There is a hotfix to resolve this issue. Please see: Previous versions of a file or of a folder in a DFS share are not listed if you access the share through a nested DFS link from a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2466048Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi Arthur, thanks for your reply - I didn't find that hotfix before. I installed it on a Win7 client, but didn't find an improvement. Far from it, I now can't access previous versions from \\domain.local\dfs\main too. Only the direct way by the volume share is still working (tested with all DFS root servers) Do I have to deploy it on the clients only or on the servers too?

Problem still exists, but only on the clients. If I access Previous Versions of an DFS share on an Server 2008 (R2), the list is displayed correctly, but not on Windows 7 systems (32bit) (Hotfix installed as well as not installed)
