No networking - media disconnected - build 7100
No networking on a fresh 64-bit RC1 (7100 build) install. Symptoms:Can't even ping the gateway. Ipconfig shows "media disconnected". The strange thing is if I unplug and plug back the Ethernet cable _sometimes _ I get a couple ping replies with very long delay TTL (~ 950ms). Exact same setup (NICs, router, cables) works just fine for the past couple of years with Vista 32-bit. I dual-boot between Win 7 and Vista. Troubleshooting:Downloaded the latest 64 Intel NIC drivers, changed NIC card configuration speed, duplexing, etcswitched between DHCP/Static,switched NICs Intel/ Marvell. Setup: Asus P5NSLI mobo, Intel E6300 CPU, 4GB memory. Intel NIC, Marvell NIC. All works perfectly with Vista 32bit. Any ideas?ssdf

Media disconnected usually indicates a hardware problem like a loose cable or whatnot. Have you been able to get it working properly yet? - Nick

You say you've never had this system working on a 64 bit Operating System before, maybe that is your problem. Can you try the 32bit Windows 7?

After working for 20 years with Windows/ethernet I'm well aware of the probable cause. As I indicated in the original message that was one of the first things I checked on _both_ NIC's. The same system works perfectly if I boot to Vista. This is NOT a hardware problem.ssdf

64 bit versioncould be the cause. What's that going totellus - that the 64 bit version indeedhas a bug and the 32 not??? I can't spend more timeto download/burn and reinistall the 32 bit. At this point I'm going to wait for the next RC. ssdf

It simply means 64 bit has fewer drivers. Obviously 32 bit Operating Systems are far more common, so therefore they have more drivers available. Many hardware vendors don't even make drivers for 64 bit Operating systems. Waiting for the next RC will still require time to download and burn.

Allow me to correct your answer above. It is nota question of few drivers. Both NIC's were detected correctly by Win7 whichinstalled the drivers from theinstall CD.Further, I don't think the 64 bit driver maturity is the issue either. One of the NIC cards is a Intel Pro 1000 MT desktop card. One of the most mature and widely used NIC's out there. Windows 64 bit has been used for years now (XP 64, Vista 64, Windows 2008 64 bit, etc..).So either someone compiled the drivers for Win 7incorrectly or theissue is someplace else in the OS. No matter how you slice it, it's a bug. ssdf

No, I'm afraid it's not how you think. The fact of the matter is you had been using Windows Vista 32 bit, and now Windows 7 64 bit. You can fight doing so, but installing Windows 7 32 bit would likely work just fine here. Maturity is not an issue at all. It still remains fact that not all hardware has 64 bit drivers.
