No network - server execution failed (revisited)
hi. i know many of you like me have been getting this error and it many of us have found out that it is because of AIM 6.5 (multiple builds).
some of the symptoms are:
1. Vista Displays a Red X saying that its not connected to a Network even though it is.
2. Connection may say "Connection status: unknown. Server execution failed."
3. WMI is corrupted
4. Windows Media Player wont be able to play Mp3s
5. No sound can be heard from computer
6. Windows Security Center reports errors
i already know there is a sort of workaround which fixes both the connection and the wmi but i would actually like to get to the root of the problem.
on the AIM technical forums, they have stated that the cannot reproduce the problem so it must be something that all of us share in our specs or software (unless it's just pure dumb random misfortune).

i am trying to compile commonalities between our systems to determine the root cause.

okay guys. i am telling you this. it is a aim 6.5 problem with vista concerning the networking issues. I had a network personnel from my college network who is in my class tell me about this. i had this problem also but found out what to do to late. you have to run a command from the command prompt restart your machine and there you go. he is currently using aim 6.5 on vista. i am waiting for him to get back to me. the problem i faced today is that only aim 6.x clients can connect to aim or so it seems like

HPupdated my wirless adp. and I had more problems,so I had to roll back my computer in order to connect at all. I had windows 98 when it was new, the same problems with computer crashes and connections. I complained but nothing ever got repaired. I think I could of got $10.00 or $50.00 back for all the hassles I faced but I got sick at the time the paper work was do and I was denied even that help.I used my son's xp and it work much better then 98 or vista.

I got this same problem after installing AIM 5.93 on Vista (I don't like the newer versions of AIM). I'm still able to access my LAN and Internet through my network card, however some of my inbound stuff isn't working. For example, I can no longer remote desktop into my box from other locations.
I'm also getting continuous security warnings from Windows Security Center saying that I don't have AntiVirus installed even thoughI have McAfee 8.5 installed with the latest dats. The thing also says my spyware is turned off when I am clearly running Windows Defender. When I click "Turn On Now" it searches for updates and says "There are no new definitions available to download for Windows Defender".
All this happened just after installing AIM. There should be a compatibility warning when installing it.
I'm running:
Vista Ultimate
P4 Hyperthreading, 2GB RAM
GeForce 8800
Visual Studio Team Suite
SQL Server 2005 Dev Edition
VMWare
Virtual PC 2007
Office 2003
Photoshop 7

I just posted in the old thread on this, didn't see that a new one had been started. I just ran into this problem today after running vista ultimate on my machine since March. I'm pretty sure it was aim 6.5 that caused it as well, I installed nero 8 and that today and nothing else. Microsoft should've had a problem this serious fixed back in February when it was first mentioned. Implementing the fixes from the other thread leaves your entire hard drive wide open for anyone that has access to your network. So if your on a college campus, every single kid in the school could potentially access your files on your hard drive if you apply the fixes from the other thread, they dont even need a password.
They could even go into your system files and delete stuff, modify stuff, plant viruses, whatever they want.
This just plain silly that Microsoft hasn't recognized and released a fix for this serious of a bug. And yes I say it's microsofts bug, it dosn't matter if AIM causes it to happen, it is still a bug in windows vista that aim just happened to find.

"you have to run a command from the command prompt restart your machine and there you go."
What command do you run? I am having this problem also (after AIM 6.5 update ) have uninstalled it and aol from my computer but the problem won't go away. Any ideas - my network and sharing center now freezes up because of this

I have
ProcessorAMD Turion(tm) 64 X2, 1800 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
HP Pavilion Dv2221us
Adobe Acrobat 8 (had to reinstall as AIM 6.5 also blocked my scanner )
Office 2007
Expression Web
Nvidia GeoForce 6150
Nvidia Networking Controller
Wireless (Broadcom)
2 gb memory
Roxio Creator Suite 9
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 and Premier Elements 4
I used the fix on the AIM Boards and now all working (I also went into the registry and removed all references to AOL and AIM then restarted - and everything came back I then installed AIM Pro for Vista and now no more problems
Amazing that aol cannot recreate - apparently aim 6.5 is blocking some services causing these problems

can someone provide the exact link on the aim board?

actually AIM itself is the problem. For some reason the software corrupts part of the files for all versions of Windows Media Player 11 at the moment. Besides theworkaround they give you, I'm afraidthe only otherway to restore functions is to either rollback, or uninstall the player and reinstall it (once AIM has been removed, of course).
I know it sounds drastic, but it would be safer not to use the software until an announcement of a definitive fix has been made.

Okay, So I had the network issue before, and my MP3 player wasn't being read, uninstalled AIM 6.5, did the code, (I'm on Vista Home Premium) restarted and yes, it worked, even my MP3 player driver was "magically" working, I tried to install AIM 5.9 because Pidgin is just too basic for me, internet sucks again, not having the connection (red x) issue, but my connection won't load pages fully, if at all. I also have the problem with WMP skipping at the end of my songs, I've tried several fixes such as resetting the player through Movie Maker, running as Administrator, redoing the CommandPrompt from before but it is already there, so that's not a solution... If you all have any suggestions PLEASE. I'll try anything, I'm afraid of jacking up my computer because I don't really know what I'm doing, so things have to be explained like they would be to your grandma!Ashley

This seems to be a problem with vista. I had this issue also when installing AIM 6.5 on vista ultimate. I have been able to get it fixed by using System Restore to restore older versions of the system files. To access system restore, go to start menu and search "system restore" and you will be able to get your connection issue fixed. Hope this helps.

Well it seems to be working now, but I'll keep that in mind if it starts messing up again. Will that mess things that I've downloaded up? Like music and what not?

Data that is saved on the hard drive after the restore point will not be deleted. However, programs that were installed after the restore point may be uninstalled as part of the restoration process. If you want to be safe, move your music, etc. to My Documents, so that the files you wish to preserve will not be affected.

I was having trouble with music skipping before I even installed AIM, and it's only ever done it to me since I installed Vista...
There are still a lot of problem with audio and Vista right now, so the skipping might be related to that instead of this. I don't know if it's because mine was an upgrade or if it occurs with everyone, but if others get it with a clean install, please let me know.

this will fix it
I suffered this error today after installing the latest Version AIM messenger that would be version 6. I discovered I was given no access to my network and sharing folder yet still sporadically had internet access. So Here's how I managed to fix it.
I uninstalled AIM
I uninstalled the viewpoint media player which came with AIM
I ran a registry cleaner
I did the following
Opened my start menu -> all programs -> Maintenance
Right clicked on the command prompt and clicked Run as administrator
once the command prompt opened I entered the following Hitting enter after each entry
Net localgroup Administrators localservice /add
Net localgroup Administrators INTERACTIVE /add
Net localgroup Administrators IUSR /add
Net localgroup Administrators NETWORK /add
Net localgroup Administrators NETWORK SERVICE /add
Net localgroup Administrators SERVICE /add
Net localgroup Administrators SYSTEM /add
I then rebooted my computer

Thanks a lot. It worked for me. I also found another fix.Firstly create a text file and the paste the code below and name it WMIFix.cmd
@echo oncd /d c:\tempif not exist %windir%\system32\wbem goto TryInstallcd /d %windir%\system32\wbemnet stop winmgmtwinmgmt /killif exist Rep_bak rd Rep_bak /s /qrename Repository Rep_bakfor %%i in (*.dll) do RegSvr32 -s %%ifor %%i in (*.exe) do call :FixSrv %%ifor %%i in (*.mof,*.mfl) do Mofcomp %%inet start winmgmtgoto End:FixSrvif /I (%1) == (wbemcntl.exe) goto SkipSrvif /I (%1) == (wbemtest.exe) goto SkipSrvif /I (%1) == (mofcomp.exe) goto SkipSrvwinmgmt /RegServer:SkipSrvgoto End:TryInstallif not exist wmicore.exe goto Endwmicore /snet start winmgmt:End
Then right click to file WMIFix.cmd and select Run As Administrator. Finally reboot your computer. All done.

Thank you so much! This worked for me. However, the first time I tried to login after the reboot it would not let me and kept cycling back to another login as admin. Atempt to login as guest presented a black screen and mouse cursor only.
I rebooted again and it was a little goofy but worked. Now I can use network and sharing as also the networking icon in the tray is lit up correcty withour the red X.
You have my utmost gratitude for this solution. All the other stuff I have read online was no help at all.
The post below this one also is possible solution, but now that it is working I amnot trying anything else.
