No emails in my inbox
All of the email that was in my inbox has disappeared and I'm not able to receive any mail. I can only send mail out. How do I retrieve new email and all the old mail that was in my inbox? I get the following error message when I try retrieve emails: An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'incoming.verizon.net', Server: 'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C0133 This seemed to happen when I uninstalled SpamFighter from my computer. SpamFighter says there is no connection. I also have AVG on my machine, if that matters.

Error Number: 0x800C0133 = a corrupt Inbox. Move any mail you wish to save to a local folder you create. Then delete the problem Inbox as follows. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the Inbox.dbx and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE. To help prevent this in the future: Do not archive mail in the Inbox or Sent Items. Create your own user defined folders and move the messages you wish to save to them. Empty Deleted Items folder daily. Although dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2GB, I recommend about a 300MB max for less chance of corruption. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

Thanks for the response. I'm not sure how to close open folders. I've played around with this before unsuccessfully. Thanks.

Got it, I just closed all the folders by clicking on the top folder.

Great, that helped me retrieve my current email from the time that my inbox (full of old emails) disappeared (4/13/10). Is there a way to retrieve all of my OLD emails. I noticed that my recycle bin has a bunch of OE things in there. I currently only have my email from the last six days.

There are a few things to try. First. Is there an Inbox.bak file in the Recycle Bin? If so, check the date created and post back before you do anything else. It must be one dated before you just compacted. If you do not have a usable bak file, try this next. Follow the instructions closely. The Inbox.dbx file you just deleted should be in the Recycle Bin. Correct? Drag it to the Desktop. Rename it to Temp.dbx. Open OE and create a folder named Temp. Open the new folder and then close OE. (You must do this). Go to Windows Explorer and locate the Message Store folder for your OE identity, but don't open it. Click on the Desktop and drag the Temp file from the Desktop in the right hand pane to the OE store folder in the left pane. Prompt - "Do you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes. Open OE. Can you see the messages? If not, you will need this tool to have any chance of getting them back. DBXpress: http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx You may need to run it in the Extract From Disk Mode if its normal recovery mode fails to find the lost messages. Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]
