No connetion to Internet with ethernet
I'm having some trouble with my computer. I run Windows 7 Home premium 64-Bit and as of this morning I've had trouble with connecting to the internet. My computer is a desktop which is always connected to a ethernet cable and never uses wireless. I do take it to my friends house sometimes but after today it seemed to have just stopped connecting. I've tried different cables. The other computer in my house. (The one I'm using to write this.) Is connected to the internet on the same router. I've looked everywhere but all I could find were problems with Wireless networks. I get a red X over the internet Icon on the bottem right and hovering over it I get "No connection - No available connections." Even though I'm using the same cable and router I have been for the past few months.

The main reason behind this issue is the problem with the Ethernet card installed in your system. Any fault with the Ethernet card will prevent you from getting connected to the Internet. Sometimes, the problem may also exist if the Ethernet card is not installed or if its drivers are not properly updated. Hence, you need to troubleshoot it to fix the problem. In order to fix the issue, you need to troubleshoot and update the Ethernet card. For that, initially you need to click on the ‘Control panel’ option from the ‘Start’ menu. In the corresponding window, you need to click on the ‘Hardware’ tab and then click on the ‘Device Manager’ section. This will end up in displaying a list of devices, in which you need to click the ‘Network adapter’ option, which will show you the Ethernet card. You just need to double-click on the card to get the options to troubleshoot or to update the drivers. Sorry for no updated status. But none of this is working. I've tried everything suggested and still nothing. Could it be a problem with the motherboard itself? I use the ethernet ports in the back of my motherboard, not a seperate PCI card with a ethernet adapter.

If you open Control Panel and check Network and Sharing Center>Change Adapter settings - does the ethernet adapter show as 'Cable unplugged' ? If so, I'm having simialr issues and am wondering if this is now an infection of some sort. I've been unable to resolve it using information from a number of forums. At least you should be able to install a PCI adapter to resolve the problem. I had to use a USB adapter to restore internet access. I'll post again if I find a solution. Regards, JimJ Chambers

If you get a red X that indicative of a hardware/cable problem. Change the cable and if need be, change the cable to another port on the router. Miguel Fra / Falcon IT Services Computer & Network Support, Miami, FL Visit our Knowledgebase and Support Sharepoint Site

I just bought a PCI adapter. And installed the drivers. Restarted the computer. And still to no avail I'm STILL getting this error. All 3 network ports show "cable unplugged" and I've tried multiple cables and different routers. This is a brand new Dynex gigabit PCI adapter. It came with a CD driver installtion. I plugged it in, installed the drivers. Nothing... Nada... Zip. For some reason where it should show the connection "tree". Which goes from computer, to router, then to internet. It shows no pictures and it's just something about a dependcy server or something.

Hmm... Okay. So... Now it's showing I have a connection. BUT! When I look at the status the IvP4 connection shows nothing. But every 15-20 seconds it will send and receive packets. But it isn't a constant thing. I have activity... For once. Now I need to figure out what's going on now.

Hi Commanthe2, you said.. I'm having some trouble with my computer. I run Windows 7 Home premium 64-Bit and as of this morning I've had trouble with connecting to the internet I guess you've tried turning the router OFF for 10-15 seconds in case it needs a reset.. Also don't forget to use Network Diagnostics - (troubleshoot problems) directly from the systray icon. Or else go into Network and Sharing Centre and diagnose from there.. Have you tried diagnosing the adaptor itself. Go to change adaptor settings from Network and Sharing Centre - and try diagnosing any problems there too. I was having router problems - frequent drop-outs and the like and found it was a mains power problem - indirectly - when I plugged the router into a UPS I got for a new Desktop computer. Since then I've only had to reset the router once in over a month now - rather than sometimes 2-3 times per day.. If you can't get a connection - try turning OFF the connection to the other computer - and retrying with only the computer you're having troubles with - perhaps it's trying to lock onto the same IP address - doing that has helped me here (well before I got the UPS in the mix anyways.. ) Regards, pkn2011 If my post was helpful - give it a Vote. I've done all that. But where it should show a "map" of my network connection. It just shows the netword depdency server is down. Or something like that. I don't get the map showing My Computer ---- Network ---- Internet. It's just a blank area.

I don't get the map showing My Computer ---- Network ---- Internet. It's just a blank area. Okay. Well you mentioned previously about Malware - what about firewall - I'd be pursuing what Nano Warp said above.. "Perhaps the old security software is the issue. Uninstall it and reboot the computer." btw - what firewall are you using? Perhaps that's blocking the router IP.. Can you turn it off temporarily? You and others suggested a harware problem - that'd be the next consideration also.. Best of luck, pkn2011If my post was helpful - give it a Vote. I've uninstalled Norton 360. Still nothing. My firewall is also disabled and still not connecting. My firewall is the standard Windows 7 one. Whatever it is. It used to be Norton but since well. I uninstalled it as well as I hadn't resubcribed to it so it was just sitting there doing nothing for months.
