No Windows Login Sound - Why?
Hi, I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate on several of my machines. On one of my machines I have installed Windows 7 Enterprise. There is some minor thing that's quite irritating to me: There is no sound when Windows boot has fully progressed (just before the login dialog is shown). I have already checked in the Sounds applet for some setting... "Play Windows start sound" is enabled there. And the sound exists on disk... Can anyone enlighten me why this sound isn't played by Windows? I regularly use it as a cue for me to know that I can start working now and stop what I'm currently doing. Thanks!

Does any sound work at all? Have you played any of the sounds on the Control Panel/Sound then in Sounds tab and did a test of each sound? Have you ensured the speakers are plugged in and turned on? Have you updated all the drivers after installing Windows 7 Enterprise? You said several machines - were all machines identical? If not, what is the machine make, model and model # that isn't working correctly? (BE specific), also tell us what the sound device is and what driver is installed for it. Please don't confuse the issue by mentioning other machines and operating systems, that just clouds the issue at hand. I had to re-read to discard the garbage info (info that didn't relate to the problem), you need to be precise in problem description so it'll make it easier for others to assess the problem and give you a clear solution ;) To you it may be similar, to us its not even remotely related and has no bearing :) Is the operating system 32bit or 64bit (this might be handy once you identify the machine in question that is having the problem) Look in device manager, is there an exclamation mark ! showing that the sound device is having an issue? If there is, then try updating the driver through the properties window of that device, choose update driver which will get a driver from the Windows Update Catalog. If it tells you the latest driver is installed, then try removing the device then rescan your hardware to let Windows automatically reinstall the device and a driver then recheck the results. If still no go, then you'll have to find a driver by the OEM that's either for Windows7 or you'll have to install the driver in compatibility mode (depending on what operating systems that driver supports) MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. Does it make a sound on boot?? I just had to check myself as I keep the speaker vol LOW.My netbook with PRO makes no sound other than a low PING when it came up but I do not know if it was live mail or not.My netbook the the RC makes no sound on boot.My desktop Pro is running a data recovery and can not reboot to test it, but I not remember it playing any sounds on boot up..I hate thatand think I would have noticed. But come to think of it I only hibernate my boxes now days.

I had to re-read to discard the garbage info (info that didn't relate to the problem) Don't you think that's what I did? If you would have read my question you would have noticed the fact that this particular sound sounds on any other machine but not on this machine. Everything else works fine on this particular machine: All sounds, all devices, anything. So I left that garbage information out. As I said: It's just the log-in sound that doesn't play. And it plays on all my other machines where a different OS is installed. So probably it's a bug in Windows 7 64 Bit Enterprise.

It must be something bug / feature as a VM of win7 home on the netbook starts and shutdowns with the standard windows sounds. My Pro boxes do not play the standard windows sounds, they make low sound like the game pong made.anyone else getting sounds from Enterprise?edit:Hold on here my sound device is set to bluetooth on my netbook(s) and my Pro workstation is set to USB headset.I will assume this is why I do not hear the start up sounds.

I also have about 10 VMs running, all with Ultimate so far, but since I'm deleting/reinstalling them after a short while anyway I thought it'd be a good idea to start using Enterprise which doesn't ask me for a serial at installation.

Please check the following policy. Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->System->Logon-> Turn off Windows Startup Sound Set this policy to "Enabled".Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi Arthur, thanks for trying to help! Actually, my problem is not regarding the Startup sound but the Login sound, which is the sound one can hear just before the login prompt appears (not the one that one can hear as soon as the Deskop appears). And I want to turn it on , not off .

Hi, Yes, that policy is for the sound you described. And we should turn off or not configure this policy. Have you checked it? If the issue still occurs after you check it, I suggest you try System Restore.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I've now set this option to any available setting (enabled/disabled/not configured). None of them worked. So no-one can reproduce this behaviour then on an Enterprise edition of Windows 7, 64 Bit?
