Outlook express finished with Windows XP and was replaced in Windows Vista by Windows Mail. Sadly Microsoft have removed Windows Mail from Windows 7 so you are left without and 'out of box' mail client.Microsoft's 'theory' is that user will now change over to Windows Live Mail available from this link: http://download.live.com/wlmailJohn Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk; Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org; Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org;

This is true... I recall getting an email about it about a year or so ago. They changed the protocols behind Hotmail to make it more efficient.Seems the old protocol, DAV (Distributed Authoring and Versioning) protocol wasn't good for large inboxes. The new one, Deltasync was designed just for the task in question. So it's not just the address/contacts that can't sync - it's the email as well.

i have been using windows live mail on vista and also on xp and i actually like it. It has a junk mail filter, calender, you can do newsgroups on it and the best of all is your contacts can be synced as long as you have it on another computer. You do not have to make a hotmail account, you can use your own email account to set it up. If you use your own email account and you have this program on another computer if you change or add a contact, when you go onto the other computer and login with your email account, the contact will be updated. If you sign up for a hotmail account you will have the ability to do webmail and those contacts will update and you can send or receive messages. If you did not make a hotmail account when you sign in on livemail on the web you will only see your contacts but you cannot send nor receive emails.There is lots you can do with this program and it is totally free from microsoft. I like it much better than OE.robin

So it's not just the address/contacts that can't sync - it's the email as well. Really?I've been using Hotmail long before Microsoft took it over. I can still get my Hotmail emails with Outlook Express. Well.. I can quote the email. In fact, here it is:---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Microsoft Outlook Express customer, Thank you for using Microsoft Outlook Express. Our information indicates that you use Outlook Express to access a Windows Live Hotmail e-mail account via a protocol called DAV (Distributed Authoring and Versioning protocol). DAV, like POP3 or IMAP, is the way that a mail client communicates with a web-based mail server. As a valued customer, we want to provide advanced notice that as of June 30, 2008, Microsoft is disabling the DAV protocol and you will no longer be able to access your Hotmail Inbox via Outlook Express. As an alternative, we recommend that you download Windows Live Mail, a free desktop e-mail client that has the familiarity of Outlook Express and much more. This next generation of free e-mail software will allow you to easily manage multiple e-mail accountsincluding Windows Live Hotmail, plus other e-mail accounts that support POP3/IMAP. Better yet, Windows Live Mail integrates well with other Windows Live services, and downloads in minutes. After you provide your user name and password, you will automatically be linked to your Hotmail account, providing continued access to your email and contacts. We encourage you to download Windows Live Mail at http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview. And, to make your transition smoother, we've provided answers to frequently asked questions below. Again, thank you for your use of Outlook Express and we are confident that you'll be just as delighted with the new Windows Live Mail. Your Windows Live Mail team Frequently asked questions: Why are we disabling DAV? DAV is a legacy protocol that is not well suited for client access to large inboxes. Over time, as we've provided more e-mail storage to our usersand now offer 5GB inboxes for freea more efficient access protocol is needed. What are we replacing DAV with? We have developed a new, much more efficient protocol called DeltaSynch that is far superior to DAV especially for large e-mail inboxes. It enables email clients to only download changes since the last time the client polled the email server for changes. This is much more efficient and high performing than having to download all the headers in every folder as is the case with DAV. Is DeltaSynch compatible with Outlook Express? The new protocol unfortunately is NOT supported by Outlook Express and support would require too many changes to the Outlook Express software. Is there a different or new mail client I can try that uses DeltaSynch? Microsoft is providing Windows Live Mail, a free e-mail client that has the familiarity of Outlook Express and much more. This free, next generation email client enables users to easily manage multiple e-mail accounts including Windows Live Hotmail and other e-mail accounts that support POP3/IMAP. Windows Live Mail also integrates well with other Windows Live services, is optimized to work with Windows Live Hotmail, and offers: Offline mail Windows Live Hotmail account aggregation for those users with multiple Hotmail accounts Account aggregation for POP and IMAP mail accounts Rich photo-sharing capabilities Advanced search via integration with Desktop Search Safety tools (Anti-Virus scanning, anti-phishing, anti-spam features across aggregated accounts for customers who do not have an Anti-Virus product) Integration with Windows Live services including Windows Live Spaces RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feed aggregation Ability to send SMS (short message service) text to a mobile phone from Windows Live Mail Where can I download the new Windows Live Mail client? You can download the new client at http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview. Microsoft respects your privacy. To learn more, please read our online Privacy Statement. Well, not long after Microsoft sent this notice out there was a massive public outcry about it. Microsoft eventually gave in and rescinded the notice. Outlook Express does work with Live Hotmail but a slightly reduced capacity, namely, no sync with addresses/contacts list.Didn't think too highly of Windows Live Mail when I used it for the first time. I couldn't find any sync setup for the custom Hotmail folders that I made. I didn't particularly like seeing all thatJunk mail being downloaded on my system. I want to be able to choose which folders I download. I'd rather deal with the Junk mail directly on the website, store all myread and sentmail inparticular folders and then have just those folders sync-ed and downloaded to my system.GA P35 DQ6 Mb, Intel Wolfdale 8600 3.33Ghz C2D CPU., 4x2Gb Mushkin DDR2 1066 PC2 8500 Ascents Memory Mods., 4-Western Digital Caviar SATA(2) HDD's (internal), 1 EIDE-USB External; Hauppauge PVR 1600 TV tuner, Dual Monitor: (1) Standard up top, (1) WideScreen below; Altec Lansign Speakers...

I must have missed the memo on the recind... I personally never used Outlook Express for much - except downloading hotmail folders to back them up. Since the max box size grew to 5 GB after that email was sent - I don't think I ever bothered to deal with it after that.

Windows live mail is a non-live e-mail program that installs on your computer just like Windows mail or outlook express.
