No Network after installing antivirus
I have been using W7 RC for well over a week now and it is really a great OS, but right now i'm facing a major problem with my antivirus and firewall. Ok i'm studying in a campus and i am using network provided by the isp here, so every time i want to use the internet i will have to log in to my account, to do this i simpely open my IE8 and it would redirect me to the log on page. The problem starts AFTER i install my antivirus+firewall which is Bitdefender Tottal 2008 and reboot my system. My network adaptor will show me my IP that i get from a DHCP in my hostell block and it even shows me my gateway IP which is all perfectlly fine but when i try to connect to the internet nothing happens the page would not redirect and it just time outs. I also tryed to force an IP or to set a static IP under IPv4 and even that did not work once i click OK it just proseeds with out any error message but when i go back in and check my setting under my IPV4 it shows me that i have not configured my Default Gateway so i reconfigured the gateway and again same problem when i went back to check the setting the Default Gateway was blank. i even tryed disable and renable my Network adaptor it show me that i'm not connected to anything this time no IP at all, I even disabled my realtime security and firewall and it did not make any diffrance. In the end i gave up and Uninstalled my antivirus and instantlly i was able to connect to the network once again. Please Help i Need to Install a Firewall and a Antivirus the inviroment in my campuss is really bad to many virusess every where >.<

BitDefender 2008 might not be compatible with Windows 7. Here's Microsoft's list of compatible antivirus programs, some of which offer free trials: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/antivirus-partners/windows-7.aspx Avast and NOD32 also work with Windodws 7. I think that Windows 7's built-in firewall is good enough, with no need for an additional firewall program. Steve Winograd MS-MVP (Windows Desktop Experience)

well currently windows 7 is still a beta version, as we all know Microsoft's OS is never 100% secure and will in the near future be attacked by viruses. Microsoft should fix the compatibility problem in order for us [RC users] to find out the week points in the OS and how does the anti virus effect the performance of the system. any suggestion ?

vasilli,Win 7 is now in RC which means nearly done, not a beta.I don't know what your affinity is to Bit defender, but frankly, thereis better AV software out there. Steve provided you the link to the Win 7 compatible vendors who are providing their RC versions for free. Obviously, BitDefender decided not participate. What does that tell you?Use the Kaspersky, which installs it's own firewall and doesn't slow down the OS, and you will be safe. Install the typical or default method. The anti-spam mail training takes fifty emails. I've used it personally and for my clients for years. Never had anything get by it.Uninstall the BitDefender and install something from Steve's links and all will be well.Steve gave you the answer. Mark it as such and show him a little respect for taking the time to help you.

Hi everybodyFirst at all excuseme for my "bad english" (yo en realidad hablo castellano) but I have the same problem you haveI think the antivirus has nothing to do with the internet problem, I installed W7 twice the first time I instaled AVG 8.5 and LOSTconnection to internet after reboot, the second time I don't install AVG but reboot after install Dreamweaver (bad idea)because Ilost connection again. If I open Network & Sharing Center I can see a red "X" over the connection between my home network icon (little house with a nice red roof) and the internet globe. Access type reports "No Internet access".

I know W7 is at a stage that is almost complete but it's still under testing and still has a few bugs here and there anyways i do not like Kaspersky because it is annoying and frankly speaking all the av that participate for W7 has free trails are rubbish, bitdefender is one of the best in the world i used it and i really like it because it is not resource hungry never the less they are all trails, now why should i use a free trial why i have one that i pay for ?... now the problem is with the firewall. For some reason all 3rd party firewall are conflicting with some of W7 network component [i dont know which one]. LOL i'm currently running with out any 3rd party AV or firewall at all. I just hope this problem can be solved.. BTW what Steve gave me was not the answer to my question. I'm not that stupid to not know the free av's that W7 is giving for trails.

vasilli,The reasonyour paid-foranti-virus can't be used is that the core of the Win 7 OS is different. The Vista or XPversions of the AV aren't compatible. The AV's for Win 7 are betas, RC's or technical previews that are compatible with Win 7. These will provide protection during the Win 7 RC phase as no others will work. The Win 7 RC and the Anti-virus programs are not intended to be on your "production" machine.Work through all of the issues, try all of the anti-virusprograms and get it to work and determine what you like. Then, when Win7 is officially released you'll be ready to go and deploy it on yourprimary computer(s).My apologies for stepping on your software preferences. But, for now, you'll need to use one of the AV programs that is compatible with Win 7 RC if you want protection. Whichever one you use, it shouldn't interfere with your conectivity. Use the default, typical install from the vendors to avoid the need for constant interaction.http://www.microsoft.com/windows/antivirus-partners/windows-7.aspxSo, your machine is running fine with no hardware or connectivity issues without an Anti-virus program? If so, you are ready for the official release.Other than the anti-virus programs, if software worked on Vista it should work on Win7. XP software will cause headaches.

Well Thank You Mr.Nano Warp for your kind reply. yes the reason why i decided to install and use W7 RC was to find out which of my software works on the system. i started of with the most impotent software for windows which has always been an antivirus and a firewall [windows has a bad reputation for being attacked by virus ]. Now i know which software to use and which software to avoid. Thank you
