No Message history?

It seems I can only save as the current conversation, so there's no automatic message history in office communicator. Coming from a jabber world this is pretty disappointing Sad

So as suggestion... I would like to have automatic message history, searchable, and optionally encryptable.

Regards

Did you miss the "Save my instant message conversations in the Outlook Conversations History folder" option under the Personal tab? This requires Outlook of course, but provides the automatic message history, search functions and encryption through these built-in features in Outlook. We found this was enabled by default right out of the box. Not sure if this functions in the same way without an Exchange back-end though.

  1. In the Office Communicator Title bar, click the Menu button, point to Tools, and then click Options.
  2. On the Personal tab, under Personal information manager, select Microsoft Office Outlook from the drop-down list.
  3. Select or clear the following options, as appropriate:
    • Display my Outlook Out Of Office information to contacts in my Personal, Team and Company Access Levels.
    • Update my presence status based on my Outlook calendar information
    • Show meeting subject and location to contacts in my Team Access Level.
    • Save my instant message conversations in the Outlook Conversation History folder.
    • Save my call logs in the Outlook Conversation History folder.

Hi... Save my instant message conversations in the Outlook Conversation History folder setting is not enabled by default. Is there way to enable this option as a part of installation.(i.e: registry key)

Yes, this setting is controllable via a registry policy key(IMAutoArchivingPolicy) and is included in the comunicator.adm Group Policy template. If the behavior is controlled via GPO then the settings is actually disabled in the client settings so that users cannot override the setting themselves.

Is there some way to hack the registry or something else to make this option enable ? In my OC, it's disabled by default. Jeff, could you please offer some suggestions ?

You can create a batch file from the following command that will enable Client side Archiving, although it works like the GPO so the setting is disabled in the client settings. If you want to remove it you need to go into the registry and delete the entry.
reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator /vIMAutoArchivingPolicy/t REG_DWORD /d 1

This is still not working.. i ran the command.. the value for vIMAutoArchivingPolicy is set to 1. I am still seeing the option "Save my instant message conversations in the Outlook Conversations History folder" disabled. Can i enable this option?

Change the registry value to "0" and its working fine for me.

What causes the behavior of the Communicator R2options for these settings to be grayed out? I can't set my options as they are grayed out and this option is not currently deployed in my environment. The whole Personal Information Manager section is grayed out in my case.

Thanks,

Those options are grayed out for me too. Did you figure how why, or how to fix this?

setting the following registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator\IMAutoArchivingPolicy (DWORD) to 1 and restarting OC will store future IMs int he conversation folder of outlook.

Similarly there is CallLogAutoArchivingPolicy (DWORD) to store call history.

I am also very keen to be able to save my instant message conversations in the Outlook Conversation History folder, but my options to do so are grayed out as well...and, I can't even find this IMAutoArchivingPolicy registry key in the registry editor. Perhaps it is hidden by the GPO that @JeffSchertz mentioned? Is there a way to override this on the client side? Or is there an alternative registry editor we could use to access the hidden keys? I did try the batch command that @Adelay mentioned, and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Do I need to manually create a folder in Outlook called "Conversation History?"

Try removing:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator

Has anyone found a Fix for this as we want to set a group policy but we want to give control to the user and enable logging by default?
November 24th, 2010 5:06pm

I deleted the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator so there were no entries for Communicator at all. Re started Communicator and everything was available. NO MORE GRAY!!!!

Create IMAutoArchivingPolicy (DWORD) Value=1 to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator

In my case, I found the IMAutoArchivingPolicy in  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator and changed it to 1 (Make sure both Outlook and Communicator are closed at the time) and when I reopened communicator, the box was now checked but the option was still greyed out.

I found that if I deleted the IMAutoArchivingPolicy and then changed the DisableSavingIM value from 1 to 0 and then restarted Communicator, the option was no longer greyed out and the box was checked.

I tested and now my conversation history is being saved.

Happy Trails!

ack!!!! speak to me like a 4 year old.  What does it mean to creat IMAutoArchivingPolicy (DWORD) Value=1 to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Softwar<//wbr>e\Policies\Microsoft\Comm<//wbr>unicator
Where do I find this on my computer?

I'm really lost and I need to be able to log conversations for future use

I am facing the Same Problem, Save Instant Message Conversations in the Outlook Conversations History Folder lync 2010 is greyed out.

Should the policy on Lync Server "EnableIMAutoarchieving" be Set to true, using Get-CsClientPolicy

currently this is false ?

June 30th, 2014 12:21pm

I am on a 64 bit Win7 system with Communicator 2007 R2 and there was no HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator key.  I figured it was the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator key that I was looking for.  Creating registry entries in those keys had no effect however.  So I created HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator\IMAutoArchivingPolicy and set it to 1.  Now the option is checked and greyed. I couldn't replicate the effect @Maharishi64 got with the DisableSavingIM key however.

Now.... how do I access the conversation history folder in Outlook 2007?  Where is it?
