No Local Access Connection on winXP!
Hi, I'm currently running on winXP. Was getting on fine going on wireless, but all of the sudden the speed just plummets to record low. So I went to get myself a nifty little gadget that hooks up to my router and cable model via a powerpoint. The product link as follows: http://www.aztech.com/sg/homeplug_hl105e.html. Happily, I tried to proceed for the setup but to my horror, I could not find any local access point on my winXP network folder. The only option available to me is the wireless LAN. FYI, this gadget is plug & play so I guess the problem might not lie with the product itself. Can anyone of you enlighten me why there is no LAN option avail to me? I'm using a HP mini-note 2133 by the way. Thanks all in advance for the advice given! :)1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi khoolz, My best guess is that you have your NIC card disabled. You can check this setting by going to Control Panel, and Network Connections. I'd bet that your Local Area Connection status says Disabled. Double-click on the connection and choose Enable. Otherwise, you might want to check the settings in the BIOS to see if it is disabled there. Cheers, Barbara

Hi Barbara, Thanks for your reply. But my NIC card is currently enabled. During this time, I did some research, and found a LAN driver on HP's support website for the NIC card I was using. So I had it installed and the local access connection icon now appears under my network connections. Therewith another issue surfaced... Status shows it to be running at 100mbps, but the actual reality is much much slower, in fact in every instance i try to load a website, it will not completely finish showing it. The situation now is back to square one as before when my wireless internet speed drops drastically. There are some potential problem spots I can identify now: A faulty NIC card?? Clash of IP address?? (I was using wifi previous; and now changed to using LAN, so has the IP address changed or anything?) I would like to hear you comments on this. Cheers!

Hi khoolz, I'm thinking you can rule out a faulty NIC card, because you're having the problem with both your wireless and ethernet connections. These are both separate devices. You can determine your ip address by opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig. But it seems if there was a clash of IP addresses, a message would have appeared on your screen saying so. In addition, your speed would not decrease (you're either connected or not). Have you taken a look at your router? The vendors usually provide firmware updates that might help your situation. Do you have security on your router? If not, others might be 'sharing' your connection with you. That would definitely slow your connection. Barbara

Hi Barbara, Thanks for your advice. I think I have cheated my way out of this problem by taking the easy way out: by reformatting my computer. At the same time, I also downloaded a network driver (LoM) from HP Mininote support website. With the driver safely installed, I am able to utilize the gadget that runs internet data connection via the power source. As for the limited wireless connectivity, I have since shifted the router to a more prominent location where there are no physical obstructions. I guess all the steps listed above helped solve the problem in one way or the other. Hope this is useful advice for everyone! :)
