No Internet after reformatting and reinstalling Windows XP Professional.
A few days ago I found my old store-bought copy of Windows XP Professional. I reformatted the computer on which it was installed, reinstalled the same copy of Windows XP Pro, but now I cannot access the Internet at all. Whereas if I could not get online before the reformatting process there would be a red cross through the network icon, now there is no icon whatsoever at any point. When I try to surf the Internet on IE6 (since I can't get online, I can't update past IE6), it tells me it has failed to find the server on any Web site I try. It's like my computer fails to even detect my connection. I have called Comcast (my ISP), they say my connection is functioning properly and there's nothing they can do.2 people need an answerI do too

Go to Device Manager (Start > Run > devmgmt.msc ) and look under Network adapters . You might have to install a device driver.

I don't see Network adapters among the devices listed. However, there are three listings in Other devices: Other PCI Bridge Device, SM Bus Controller, Video Controller (VGA Compatible) Are any of these network adapters?

I'm sorry, but without looking at your computer, I can't answer that. You need to install device drivers for your computer, either from a disk that came with the computer or from files that you download from the computer maker's web site for your model. Before reformatting and reinstalling, always open Device Manager and write down the list of installed devices.

This is seriously annoying. I don't know what to download, or where to even begin looking for that information, nor how to find what I need online. No disk came with my computer, the computer maker is me. I didn't unfortunately write down the list of devices I had previously. I am literally driving myself crazy looking for an answer to this. I downloaded a .rom to potentially update my BIOS so it actually detects the freaking connection, but I don't want to jump into a BIOS fix -- yeah, I know the risks, but I'm at my wit's end.

When you built your computer, did you install a network adapter? Does the motherboard have one built in? Check the motherboard manufacturer's web site.

I did check the Asus website. It has a network adapter built in, yes. But I am not sure what I should be downloading. Am I possibly looking for a network adapter driver, or am I looking for a BIOS update or what?

Look for drivers that apply to your motherboard. I recommend that you check the ASUS FAQ for Windows 7 and post any further questions in the ASUS Support forums . The people there can probably help you better than we can here.
