Nework connection problems
I need help please! Two new computers running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition. I'm trying to share files on computer number one with computer number two. Every time the workstation is shut down the network drive must be re-mapped on the workstation. When the computer boots up it says that it is unable to connect to the network. Internet is functioning fine. How can I keep it connected? Thanks! Tessh

Hi Tessh, Do the two computers connect via peer-to-peer connection, or connect via a router? If they connect via a router, is the connection is wireless or wired? Additionally, please let me know when you boot the computer, if you can manually access the shared folder, and when you do not re-create the network drive, if it will work after a while. I suggest that you disable the anti-virus and firewall on both computers, and then test if the issue still occurs. If so, please boot in Clean Boot Mode. Clean boot ================= Lets disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: 1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment, if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue. For more information about this step, please refer to the following KB article: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com//kb/929135 If it does not work, a workaround is to use a logon script to add the mapped network drive every time when you log on. 1. Please open Notepad, and copy the following contents in to Notepad. NET USE [drive letter]: \\[computer name]\folder name 2. Save it as "map.bat" to Desktop. 3. Open the folder C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup 4. Copy the file map.bat into this folder. Hope it helps.

Hi, Arthur. Thanks for the reply. I was very frustrated that I wasn't getting any answers. We used to be ableto share our files just fine on XP Home Edition. We are using Vista's file sharing set-up, so I guess peer-to peer. On Monday I thought I had my problem fixed when I learned on your site that I needed to set-up a user account for the other user on my computer too. I did this and it connected just fine. However, during the day, the program we were file sharing with would freeze and not respond. After talking with technical support for the program we are using, they said everything was fine with our program, that apparently we were losing the network connection between our computers sporadically. Now, when I try to access my shared files on her computer I am getting a message similar to "prince haasil" that says that "(my computer path) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact admin., etc." Just what is the proper way to set this up, and whyare we losing our connection to each other? The computers are about 20 ft away from each other. These are office computers, so we need to resolve this issue. Everyone is really frustrated with Vista. Thanks for your help. Tessh

Hi Tessh, Peer-to-Peer connection means that the two computers connect wired directly via a single line. There are not any other Network Devices they connect to. Is that the situation? Generally in office environment, your network cable will connects to a device such as router or switcher, and computers communicate via that device. What is the case in your office? Additionally, are the computers in a domain or a workgroup? Please let me know which program you are using. If you cannot access the shared files on your computer from another computer with a permission issue, there are multiple reasons. From your description, I realized that you may have enabled the Guest account on your computer. Please check the access permission of the folder on your computer. 1. Right-click on the shared folder, choose "Properties". 2. Click the Security tab. 3. Click Edit. Click Add. 4. Type "Guest" (without quotation). Click OK. 5. Give the Guest account full control permission. Then try to access this folder from the other computer. If the issue persists, please temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall on your computers. Hope it helps.

O.K. I've done some work on this issue and my current problemis that the computer freezes up- says "not responding" when I try to access the program. The program is called "PowerChurch". I have seen in the device manager that the NIC card sometimes disappears on computer number 2. For what reason, I do not know. Both computers are hard wired to our internet.I have tried accessing the program without any anti-virus or firewalls on. It works for a few minutes and then it freezes up - "not responding". What would cause this, and how can I fix it? Thanks alot for your help. Tessh

Hi Tessh, You may need to upgrade your PowerChurch software to the latest version. It can be downloaded from the following website. http://www.powerchurch.com/mr Please download the version 10. Then uninstall the existed PowerChurch software then reinstall it with the latest version. Important Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information. If the issue persists after the new software is installed, please let me know if file sharing between the two computers works properly. Also please let me know if the PowerChurch software does not work on both of your computers.
