New used computer biggest mistake. Looking for ideas to fix the mess.
After hearing the computer specs, I thought it would be a wonderful purchase for my sister. Fress install of Windows XP. Checked over by a tech. Thought it was good. Got it to her house, hooked it up, turned it on, and that's where the problems began. It booted fine. Got to the desktop then it got interesting. I forgot about the NT SYSTEM shut down the computer in 60 seconds thing. Yeah, it wasn't updated to SP3. Not only that, but it was going through probably the oddest BSOD ever. It would randomly blue screen for a fraction of a second then reboot. It did it several times while I was trying to fix the first problem. I got the first problem fixed then started a windows update. At the end of the update, it blue screened and rebooted. After that every website I had accessed before the windows update (www.microsoft.com, www.avast.com, etc.) could not be accessed. I could access other sites like hotmail, yahoo, and facebook. My sister was happy she could get to her sites, so I left it for the time. During that time, the blue screen issue resolved itself. A few days later, she received a call from her ISP telling her that the computer had viruses on it and she needed to get it fixed asap. At that point, we brought it back to the store and they sent it to the tech. It came back to us and it still had the same issues. I could not access any site before my original windows update and there were programs I could not download and install like windows live and itunes. I called the ISP and a helpful person told me to go to confickerworkinggroup.org to test. The test showed that the computer was most likely taken over by conficker. Working with a computer tech friend, I was able to run hijackthis and ccleaner. He couldn't see anything wrong in the reports. The only thing we can figure is that something corrupted the first time I did the windows update. The store did not give us the Windows disk, so I'm a bit lost as to how to fix the computer. I need some expert ideas, please! :) Thanks, Q1 person needs an answerI do too

Obtain the disks from the store (you'll most likely need them sometime in the future as well) and reinstall Windows XP and doing all the updates etc. or return the computer to the store and get your money back.At the moment with a used computer, all you have is someone else's mess. You could spend hours, days, weeks trying to fix this up. The computer has already been compromised, I can only recommend either reinstalling Windows or getting your money back.TaurArian [MVP] 2005-2010 - Update Services
