New unidentified network after every reboot.
After I reboot, I get the problem icon over my network icon. I open the Network and Sharing Center (by the way, on mouseover of the network icon it sees my internet connection with no internet access, but there is now a second public network listed as unidentified). By choosing my to change my adapter settings and first disabling then re-enabling my network device, it then gets rid of the unidentified network and my internet works as it should. What am I missing? What further information can I provide to help diagnose and eliminate this annoyance?

Yes I do. Does that mean that this is insolvable for the moment?
May 6th, 2009 6:58pm

OK. try restoring you pc to before you installed office. Then install office again and disable Microsoft updates. Restart your PC and everything should work fine. Weather this problem is insolvable at the moment is very unclear because I have installed Win 7 and office on 5 test machines where 3 of these has this error and that, of course, leaves 2 without. Also, I am not 100% sure that it is the Office updates... It might as well be the Microsoft updates... I think that this should only be considered as an work around but let's se what Microsoft has in mind. Hope it helps and it will be fixed by MS soon... :-) -The Digital Jedi

Is this in the beta or the RC? I have the same problem in beta, and I'm very curious to know if it's fixed in the release candidate. Steve

I am using Windows 7 RC x64, so no..not fixed Hi I also have this problem, it started after about the 4th restart of my computer, i have very little software installed at this point (Photoshop CS3 & Expression Web). Every time i start my computer i have no internet access altho i can access other computers & network drives. In Network & Sharing Center, there are 2 networks ("My Home Network" - renamed in case there was a problem with duplication, and "unidentified network"). I am confused by the Network icon in the notification area because when i click that i have a link to "Network & Sharing Center", and then when i click "Connect or Disconnect" in there, it opens the network icon in the notification area again - you go round in circles there am i missing something. In "Network & Sharing Center", if i try to remove the "unidentified network", it removes the "home network" also. The only way to solve the problem is to go to "change adapter settings" and disable, then re-enable the device, this normally causes it to set the network back up ok, altho about 1 in 10 times, it won't work and i have to go into "device manager" and physically remove the Network Adapter then "Scan for hardware changes". This finds the network adapter and sets everything up ok.
May 9th, 2009 10:32pm

I am not as savvy as I'd like to be, so I will ask here. Is there anyone able to write a script that can be ran at startup to do this disable/enable of the network adapter until Microsoft figures out this bug?

That sounds like a cool program and could solve the problem, the only issue i have with that is that we are supposed to be testing Windows to resolve problems like this, if we all run outside fixes then that is not goning to be a true representation. What i would rather is someone from Microsoft reply saying they are looking into this issue and hoping to fix it, or asking some questions to try and pin it down, rather than the silence we have had so far. I also only had this problem occaisionally in the beta, it has only happened everytime i start up since in installed Windows (x32) RC, yet i reported the problem constantly while on the beta test, obviously it has done no good so far. Anyway, i have downloaded the program so thanks for the tip. If no one can be bothered to address this issue in the near future then i will probably give up and install it and forget about actually testing this software or doing anything useful.

My Router firmware is pretty much up to date, however, i don't have this problem with XP and i didn't have this problem with Vista either, it is only when i run Windows 7 so it should be fair to assume it's a problem with Windows 7 not my hardware or any device drivers etc. It happened occaisionally with the Beta, and it happens EVERY TIME i reboot since installing the RC.

If you go into the network connection where you see the networks listed each time it connects it shows it IDing the network.this is the same as the thread here with wireless / wired networks not connecting when coming out of hibernation modewhat we need to do is post the chipsets of the nics / wi-fi we are have issue with.It is not on the PA side as there are to many differents AP's being used.

Do you have iTunes installed? If so, please check out the KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=970313.For now, you can work around the issue by disabling the Bonjour service using services.msc and rebooting.

I also have this problem. Windows 7 RC 32-bit nVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT AMD Athlon X2 2.6 GHz ASUS M2N-SLI deluxe Desktop computer, custom-built I've had this OS installed for about a week, but the problem just started happening (actually started yesterday), but I had Office 2007 installed right after I installed Windows 7 (and I don't have iTunes installed). Disabling and re-enabling the LAN device does fix it, but rebooting reproduces the problem. **My onboard LAN devices: nVIDIA nForce Ethernet Controller (there are two of them).

If you have nVIDIA ethernet controllers, and you have nVIDIA Forceware Network Access Manager installed, uninstall it and restart your computer. It worked for me, although in my case the problem reoccurred after the restart, but every restart after that was flawless - no network problems. I don't know if that will be the case for everyone else, but I'm confident that this is a universal work-around.
May 31st, 2009 6:19am

Hi I don't have nVIDIA Windows 7 drivers installed yet but will try them now, however the default Windows 7 Drivers & the Latest Vista drivers(15.25)both cause me the same problem and i DO NOT have nVIDIA Network Access Manager installed.

June 3rd, 2009 9:09pm

Installing the nVIDIA Windows 7 drivers HAS NOT made any difference. When i start up windows, i have 2 networks, "My Home Network" & "Unidentified Network", this unidentified network prevents me having internet access and i have to go and disable, then re-enable the network adapter, then it works fine. I do NOT have this problem if i install XP or Vista on this system. One of the selling points of Windows 7 is that is will work with Vista drivers. Windows 7 is either at fault because it cannot work with Vista drivers (or any drivers for that matter), or simply broke because of the issue with the phantom network regardless. Whatever the problem, it is Windows 7 that is the problem here as i do not have this problem with any other OS, and it would be lovely if someone from Microsoft could chat about resolving this.

I have found out what is causing me to LOSE internet once i have successfully connected. I run a program called GRABIT normally after i first start the computer. It is a usenet news reader. While it is getting headers for the groups i subscribe to, after a minute or so, i lose internet. This has started happening everytime i try to get new headers over the last 2 days, the reason i didn't notice immeidiately it was grabit is because it only takes a minute or 2 for me to get the new headers, so of course even having to restart it a couple of times eventually it finishes getting the headers before the internet can drop, then because it has finished, the internet does not drop out again. I don't appear to have a problem actually downloading anything from the news groups once i have successfully read the headers tho. This may be a coincidence, but on the couple of occaisions that Windows 7 hasn't shut down properly recently i.e when i've hit the "reset" button on the computer because of an issue, when windows starts up, it recognises that Windows was not shut down properly and i select for it to start up normally and then the network is configured correctly at startup. I have no idea what Windows does when it shuts down, but could something there make a change to the network configuration that then effects it when it starts up again. This may be totally irrelevant but thought i would mention it.

Hi I have tried your suggestion "route delete 0.0.0.0". When i do this, i am left with 1 network, the unidentified public network, that has no internet access. I cannot change this unidentified public network to be anything else, nor can i identify it for windows. Basically i had to disable, then re-enable the network adapter, and then it found "my home network", so this has not solved the problem. K

My computer has been on since yesterday afternoon without hibernation or restart, now each time i try to download anything off the news server using Grabit, i lose internet connection. I still have "My home network", but no internet or network connectivity, i can't even access my network hard drives. My network is fine until i try to download something using Grabit, then within seconds network is gone. Each time i have to disable, then re-enable the network adapter to get back my network. If i don't attempt to download anything using Grabit, my network stays fine. -Addition- This continued 4 times, then i restarted my computer and the problem went away (altho i did have 2 networks when i first restarted and had to fix it). This is the second time that downloading something from the News Servers using Grabit has caused my network to totally dissapear.

I have similar issues with my install. randomly no network connectivity after reboot - unidentified network with no Home Network established. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. If I select the "unidentified" network it prompts for SSID and encrypt key. if I enter both of those it will sometimes connect and other times not. when I set up the wireless network originally I told it to automatically connect to that network at start-up.I've been playing with Win 7 for several weeks and this is the only true negative issue I have found -- other than lack of driver support for older hardware, but I somewhat expected that.I would understand if it didn't work at all (for some reason -- bad driver, old hardware, etc), but the network adapter is new and it doesconnect about 50-60% of the time -- it's the random lack of network connectivity that mistifies me (and probably others here).Win 7 32bit RC, Zyxel G202 wireless usb adapter, old Athlon XP 1800 self build box that works great otherwise.

Hi This does appear to have solved the problem for me too, will keep you informed - brilliant if it has and thanks. I notice that the service actually points to"C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe". We were asked to disable the Bonjour service right at the beggining of this thread, but obviously it appears to have changed it's name - maybe to avoid being disabled? I know roughly what this service is but only ever come across it when it's causing problems, how was it installed on my PC without my approving it and why is it allowed to install when all it ever seems to do is cause problems for people. I know Apple would love Windows to fail but should they be allowed to release software that actually helps that goal? Anyway thanks again.

Hi The problem of the unidentified network seems to have been resolved but i am still getting a problem where i lose network connectivity if i do big downloads straight after starting up my computer. This time, after a restart i was browsing google earth, about 5 minutes in, while trying to map the sky, i lost network connectivity. I had happily been using google earth, then suddenly i have an exclamation mark in my network icon. It says "my home network", but underneath it says "no internet access", if i disable, then re-enable my network adapter, i have internet access again. This happened twice, then i left the computer for a while and everything is ok again. It happens everytime i start my pc, if i try to access large amounts of date, like in google earth, or via my news reader, during the first half hour or so of use. Is this problem connected, or should i repost this problem under a new thread?

What do you know!! it works! Thanks to Krull Kitty!!! I kept looking for Bonjour in the services list and didnt see it but since Krull posted the id of it... voila disabled that sucker and rebooted and only one network MyNetwork and Internet to boot Steps to take Start > Run type: services.msc FIND: Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B87 9762 in the list Right Click Select Properties From the drop down select Disabled Click STOP Click Apply Reboot That has fixed my problem with the "unidentified public network" after rebooted my system it connected to my network without any sight of the unidentified network present. One thing i have to say though; i did not have"Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B87 9762" but instead i hadId_String1.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B87 9762 once disabled it work just fine. Many thanks to all for the help. Cheers Dimitris

I had the same problemwhere "Unidentified Network" and the 'park bench' icon came up. Could not connect to my LAN or internet unless I did a manual enable/disable of the network adapter. I ensured I had the latest network adapter driver.I had set my networkup using the "Network and Sharing Center" after an Upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista.Basically what I think was happening is that the "Network and Sharing Center" wizard doesn't update the system settings for My Computer automatically. On a reboot, Windows 7 must be picking up those settings, but then uses the othersettings in "Network and Sharing Center" when trying to connect hence the "unidentified network" error (which I think must be the "WORKGROUP" default network not what I changed it to using the wizard".This worked for me:Go to "My Computer" and right click and choose properties.Click "Change settings" for "My computer, domain and workgroup settings".Click "Network ID". check that is the same as youset up under "Network and Sharing Center" ie home or work. Go back to System Properties. Now Click "Change" for "rename this computer or change its domain or workgroup".NB** Make surethe name you have here is the same workgroup name as what you selected in Network and Sharing Centre. (Bet you it isn't). Mine was set to the default "WORKGROUP" which is different from what I had set in "Network and Sharing Center".If you set both "Network and Sharing Center" and "My Computer" tothe same name it seems to work ok on a reboot!C'mon Microsoft - Windows 7 is looking good but please fix these annoying bugs!! This took me a few hours to work out trial and error.

To test if i had a problem with my router i connected my Netgear WD-Netcenter NAS hard drive direct to the 2nd Ethernet controller on my motherboard. It appears as "unidentified network" and nothing i do will allow windows 7 to access it. This OS is lovely but the Networking is still absolute rubbish, i cannot seriously use this OS until you can rectify these problems. IT IS A NETWORK ATTACHED STORAGE DEVICE, why is windows insisting it is a network and why can't i access it, if i plug it into my router, which is connected to the other Ethernet port, everything is fine. If i swap the connections around it makes not difference. Windows sucks

Odd thing is that W7RC did not have the same problem with the same software installation, but the ID string identifies itself as Bonjour. I donot haveany Apple software, but do have Adobe CS3.This solution worked! Thanks
