New external 80GB drive only shows up as 32GB?
I took an 80GB internal drive out of old Dell with Win98, bought an enclosure, connected it to my Dell desktop with XP through the USB plug, and after formatting a million times, it still only shows just under 32GBs. Any idea how to fix this so I can use all 80GBs? I have spent hours on this problem already. Please help. Thanks. Tom

Does this old drive have any jumpers set that are limiting its capacity?Did you delete the old partition, and then create the new partition via Disk Managment? did you format to ntfs?

Thanks for replying. It had ajumper set in 7-8 (master, as it was in old computer) but still I only got 32gbs. Then I removed the jumper and still ony 32gbs. I have tried formatting via disk management as many ways as I could see, including nfts, but no luck. It does seem that something is limiting it. I plugged the drive into my Gateway laptop and still got the exact same thing, so I am guessing a drive or usb issue? Thanks again.

Rather than formatting, delete the partition, then create a new onePS If it was installed on an old win98 PC it is entirely possible that a third party utility was used to allow the large disk to be used, and this may be causing the problem. If you know the make of your hd that maker may have a disk checking utility

Thanks for the help. This 80gb drive that is only showing 32gbs is a Seagate 130013A, and there is not firmware update for it, and I think I have tried its utilities, but nothing I have done detects that this is an 80GB drive. Some of the things I have tried are,-placed jumper in an different formations and reformatted each time, still only 32gbs.-I formatted in nfts and the other mode, still only 32gbs.-ran all possible tests using Seatools, etc., and drive appears to be just fine.-I have another external drive that I bought as an external drive of 160gbs, and I plugged it in the USB port, and it shows 160gbs, so computer is apparently not limited to 32gbs.-I copied more than 32gbs of pictures onto the Seagate 80gb drvie that is only showing 23gbs, and it stopped loading at 32gbs and said it was full.-I inserted an old 10gbs drive into this new enclosure, and it worked just fine, so new drive enclosure appears to be working okay. This drive worked just fine as an internal drive running win98, now it only shows 32 of 80gbs as an external drive. Any more ideas out there? Thanks. Tom M.

Everyone, I really appreciate the suggestions, but the drive just does not want to cooperate, so I am giving up. Live is too short for me to keep searching for the problem. My last attempt to fix it was to reload win98 on my old Dell where this drive used to be, and then use Discwizard to write zeros on it (took 3 plus hours). Then, that computer showed me a completely clean 80GB drive. I then put the newly cleaned 80GB Seagate in the new enclosure, plugged it into our newer Dell through the USB, and it just shows 32GB again. Something in this computer does not want this drive (an IDE drive) to show or use all 80 GB. If anyone, with this new info, has another simple suggestion, I might try it, otherwise I will donate this drive and its old computer home to a church. Thanks again for the help. Tom
