Networking with a Windows Xp machine issues
Hi I am having an issue connecting to a machine of my network with Windows XP on it. Wverytime I try to connect, it asks for a username and password. What is causing this? Because it was not set up like that on the Vista machine.

Hello NeilDexter, By default, Windows Vista uses Password Protected Sharing which a username and password is required for network access. If you haven't already, add the same user account with password to both your XP machine and Vista computer. In addition, please refer to the following resources for additional help. http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/5f605e4b-3379-4c6c-afa4-d446ae76d14b1033.mspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx If you have any further questions, please let us know. -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

It is NOT the Vista machine asking for the username & password. It is the XP machine that asks for it when I try to connect to it.

Hi, What Edition of Windows XP is being used on that machine? Home or Professional? Have you enabled the Guest account? In addition, please add the same user account and password to both the Windows XP and Windows Vista machines, logon the Windows Vista with the new account, and then try to access the Windows XP machine. How does it work?

You might not have you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Neil, check the Group Policy settings on the XP Pro machine. To do so, follow these steps: Click Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools. Click to expand Local Policies, then click User Rights Assignments. Click "Access this computer from the network" and make sure that the Everyone group is included. Click "Deny access to this computer from the network" and make sure that the Everyone group is NOT included. -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

Here is what I discovered and I finally got it to work: In Vista: Make sure Network Discovery is on Make sure Password Protected Sharing is off Make sure File Sharing is on as well as Media Share and Public Folder Sharing. Make sure your network is a private network and that your workgroup matches the XP machine. In XP: I had to select the network connection I was using and add NetBIOS/IPX/SPX Protocols as well as IPv6 I also changed my LAN Manager Authentication Level to Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated. I ensured that the XP machine matched. You can check it by going to Start > Run and type secpol.msc. Go to Local Policies > Security Options & double click Network Security: LAN Manager authentication Level. I also ensured thatcheck the Group Policy settings on the XP Pro machine. To do so, follow these steps: Click Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools.Click to expand Local Policies, then click User Rights Assignments. Click "Access this computer from the network" and make sure that the Everyone group is included. Click "Deny access to this computer from the network" and make sure that the Everyone group is NOT included. Overall, it was a bit of a pain in the but, but it works. For me, XP was the major issue.

I have tried this and it is still the same, however I do get an error message which is: \\pc-name\documents is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this service to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied Also there is not an option on the XP machine for "Everyone" in the local policies.
