Networking via Windows 7 Homeroup with existing hubs, switches, Cat5 wire and WAP.
I have existing wired network, Cat5, 1:8 hub, and 2 - 1:5 hubs, plus Linksys WAP. Upgraded two of fivePC to Windows 7 from Vista, Other three running XP but plan to upgrade to Windows 7. Cannot get 2nd PC on Homegroup, says need to have IP6v enabled. It is enabled, but I think my legacy network equioment (2003 vintage) does not support this protocol. Where can I find out if I just need new equipment OR if I have to rewire house?

I have three mini-towers and two notebook computers, all with Win 7, HomeGroup networked with a Trendnet WAP and 1 8-port switch using CAT5. My Trendnet WAP does not support IPV6 either and I have never seen an error about it. Apologize that I don't have a solution, but it's not a universal problem so it's hard to say why you're getting the error. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Interesting. My first Windows 7 PC went right on to creat a Homegroup and created a password, 2nd PC will not connect to that homegroup. Whe I troubleshot, message returned was IP6v was not enaled. But is was. I have two more machines to update to Windows 7. I going to experiment a little before I rip out my network. Thanks

Hi, What is the exact model of the Linksys WAP? As I know, there are also several routers that are limited on IPv6 support. You’d better consult with the Cisco support engineer to verify if your device supports IPv6. Meantime, please visit the following link to check if IPv6 protocol and depended services are enabled on your computer: HomeGroup get an error of must have IPv6 enabled Best Regards DalePlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. My system is hard wired via Cat5e through a Linksys EFAH08W 8-port workgroup hub. The laptop was first machine on Win7 Pro "Homegroup" and I went on "wired", not wireless, so the Linksys WAP should not be involved. Phone call to Linksys support told me that this hub DOES NOT support IP6V. Which is a good answer until I asked which Linksys product should I buy to replace this existing one. Customer service dude said "Linksys home" does not have any and I would need to contact Linksys business department. So I think I am being read a line of bull. I cannot believe Microsoft would develop the "homegroup" process in WIN7, to simplify home networking without having a simple residential grade hub available. And the handling of IP6V, if I understand it correctly, would only be peer to peer within the hous, not out to internet or VPN to office location. That's where I am at now. Thanks

As homegroup is communicated based on IPv6, it requires the router to support IPv6. As I know, there are still many routers supporting IPv6 in the world. You may search on the internet and find one.
