Networking troubles - cannot access other computers through the network
Please help! About six months ago I got Time Warner Internet. They provided a wireless router. I set up the network with my desktop and laptop. Both of the computers have XP and both of them access the network wireless. Everything was working fine. I could print with the laptop through the desktop. I could also access shared files from one to the other. Well one day it just stopped working. I guessing after a windows update. Anyway I have been spending a LOT of time sifting through here looking for answers. One thing I have discovered is there are many who are experiencing the same thing but nobody seems to get an answer to fix the problem. I found one article that told me to increase the IRP stacksize. I tried that and it worked for a few days and then it was right back to giving me this message, "You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission." I am about to lose my mind. I don't understand how it could have been working for two months and then just stop. The only firewall I have running on each one is Windows. Please HELP!!!!!!1 person needs an answerI do too

I tried following the information in the first link about turning on simple file sharing. When I go to the view tab under folder options, I don't have a "Use simple file sharing" box to check. Can this be part of my problem?

The only question of yours I can answer is that both computers are on the same workgroup. I don't know how to ping the other computer of is system is on domain.

Are all computers on the same Work Group in thier core configuration. Domain can be used only if you have a Server likw Windows 2008.Here is where you configure the computers to be on the same workgroup (No Domain).http://www.ezlan.net/network/net-name.jpg Jack-MVP Windows Networking. WWW.EZLAN.NET

Jack,Both computers have the same workgroup name. Give me some credit. I had it working at one point for several months and then all of a sudden it started crapping out on me.

Sorry. I thought I was pretty clear in the very first email. I'll try to give more detail. First off I have a laptop and a desktop that are both running XP Home. When I first got my Time Warner router, which both computers connect to wirelessly, I set up the network and everything was working perfectly. The laptop could print to the desktop printer and each computer could access the other's shared files with no problem. One day, out of the blue, the desktop could no longer access the laptops files. It would show the error \\jrmlaptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found. Since I had access one way, I didn't really mind at this point. The laptop could still print and if I wanted to send files I could from the laptop to the desktop. That worked fine for a while. Then all of a sudden the laptop stopped printing to the desktop printer and when I checked it would no longer tranfer or access files on the desktop either. I never changed any settings or the workgroup name to cause this to happen. I couldn't figure out what was going wrong so my next step was to get on this forum and do some searching. Come to find out, there are a LOT of people who are having the same problems and as far as I can tell nobody has found a solution. At one point I found an article saying to increase the IRP stack size. Mine didn't have a value so I set the desktop to 15 and the laptop to 20. Random numbers but it worked. I was all high and mighty and felt like I was the man. Well that lasted about two weeks and it was right back to neither computer being able to access the other. I get the same message every time. I'm no network engineer but I don't understand how something can be working and then all of a sudden stop. I'm guessing it has something to do with the Microsoft updates but then I have friends who update and they don't have these problems. I'm using Windows Firewall and AVG antivirus if that helps any. Please HELP!!!!!!!!!

Jack,After I typed this long email discussing my problem and I did some searching on the internet and found this one post that said they fixed the problem. It said "I resolved the problem by adding "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatable Transport Protocol " to my network properties list on each computer of my network." I tried it and it worked. Only problem I noticed so far is that it takes some time to move from folder to folder. To go back up a folder, it thinks for a minute before moving up. Any thoughts? Jerry
