Networking problem in Windows vista and XP -ip conflicts
Hi there, Would be grateful for any help - as despite all sorts of changes struggling to find any solution I set up my network recently - all computers on the network work fine - apart from my laptop which has vista installed My network setup is as such Desktop (running Win XP SP3) -connects to the internet via a usb modem - this is wired to a netgear router the other computer (2 laptop) operate wirelessly 1. laptop - had win XP - running well no problems at all - able to share files and also connect to the internet 2. laptop -has windows vista home edition - same workgroup as other computers. private network enabled and discovery and file sharing enabled. The problem i get is i get intermittent access on the vista laptop- get disconnected and unable to see other computer in network - only way is to reset network adapter or reconnect. i also notice that my desktop get the message there is an ip conflict with another computer. I have tried looking at several forums and seen people with similar problems but unable to find a solution. I am unable to also see the vista computer on networks and vice versa- so no file sharing possible. If however, I reset the network adapter then occasionally it appear but subsequently disappears. I have also upgraded to vista service pack 1 as suggested but to no avail. any ideas or suggestion would be great Thanks a lot

Thanks for the link- however i have been through most of those thing - the problem is not in setting the wireless network- the wireless networks for all computers well apart from the laptop running vista. I dont use a a The problem arises with sharing file across the network as the laptop with vista - only intermittently picks up the other computer in the network - the way to get it is by refreshing the network map or resetting the network adapter. It is very erratic andI am unable to figure out any other solution. In terms of setting I must say - I dont use an adsl -my desktop has the usb broadband modem attached. Desktop wired to router. The desktop is assigned the address 192.168.0.1 (255.255.255.0). while the laptop obtain ip wirelessly Its very frustrating as even my mate's apple laptop and iphone can get on the network withouth problems. But my vista laptop which you would hope is the most compatible has all the problems Any further solutions would be appreciated Thanks

This behavior can be caused by the installed antivirus and firewall. Please temporary disable the programs. If the issue persists, please upgrade the network adapter driver. Remove the driver first. 1. Click Start. In the Start Search box type "devmgmt.msc" and press Enter.2. Expand "Network Adapters", double-click on the entry of the wireless network device.3. Click the tab "Driver", click "Uninstall".4. Click Start. In the Start Search box type "appwiz.cpl" and press Enter. 5. Remove the entries related to the wireless network adapter. Then find the latest driver from the manufacturer's website. If the issue is not resolved, please let me know if there are multiple network adapters in the Windows XP computer that connects to Internet. If so, please change the address of the network adapter that connects to LAN. You may change it to 192.168.0.2. Then check if the issue reoccurs. If it still occurs, please disable DHCP from the router and manually assign IP addresses for each computer. If the above information does not help, please export the IP configure information from the Windows Vista computer and the Windows XP computer that connects to Internet. 1. Click Start->All Programs->Accessories. Right-click on "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as administrator". 2. Type the following command and press Enter. ipconfig /all > %userprofile%\desktop\ipconfig.txt 3. On Desktop, open the file ipconfig.txt and paste in you post. Additionally, please let me know if you can ping the Windows Vista computer when the issue occurs.

When we connect a Vista Laptop in a building the system immediately get a IP conflict. It is assigned a gateway address(as the system IP address) example 10.0.0.254 and the DNS server is a external address: 64.86.133.51 & 63.243.173.162. Our XP and OS X users aren't receiving this IP conflict. We are a full Cisco shop and I've placed Analyzers, sniffers and IDS in the environment and I still haven't found the cause of this IP Conflict within this one building. Steps I took: 1. Reboot the system 2. IPconfig /release @ /renew 3.Change a setting in the registry that prevents the systems from caching the DHCP address in the registry which is a default setting in vista(read a article about this step) 4.Applied Wire shark on the troubled system to see if there is a system infected with a worm or virus (haven't analyzed it yet) 5.Tighten security on all switches in the network 6.Applied a different system to the same port as the troubled system and it worked if I had an XP or OS X operating system.I've even done the DHCP registry flag modification as stated in step 3.... I've called Microsoft and they would help me because I would have to pay for support when I seems to be an OS issue. Cisco is working with me and suggested tighting port security more, in case DHCP snooping is taking place. Keep in mind we are a UniversityI need some help!!!!!
