Networking password protection problem
I have 2 computers that share files with each other in the home network. one is running windows 7, another one is vista. Both have password to login to the system. I have turned off the "password protected sharing" on both computers (I applied and saved this change). When I use my windows 7 one to check vista's sharing file, it still ask me the password. How can I solve it?

Well if you created the same users / passwords for both PC's you would not have the prompt. the item you disable is NOT the prompt you are seeing, that is a different password sharing prompt that is for control over the local users.

when I double clicked on the network button, it will show 2 computers icon. The name of that icon is as same as OS login account username. When I double clicked on that icon, it asked me the password to login. I'm pretty sure that is the one to login to the system. It has to be the same one, so that when my friend turn off the "password protected sharing" I don't need to know his OS login password. Otherwise, he needs to tell me what the password is, then I may have chance to sneak into his computer directly.

We don't wanna use that option, it's gotta be a solution other than creating another account. I disabled the password protection on both computer. and on the vista one, we checked full control for the folder that we want to share. Now, once I double clicked his computer's icon on my network window, it allows me to see what folder is sharing, but I can't access that folder. It says " Windows can't access, You don't have permission to access ...... Please contact network administrator to require permission." We had no problem before even the vista one had a password, but since the computer with vista has changed system login password, I can't access shared folder anymore.

Hi Dozel, Since you have disabled Password Protected sharing, the computer will access the other with Guest account. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, Everyone user group does not include Guest. Therefore, please enable Guest account and give Guest account full control permission for the shared folder. Another solution is that you enable Password Protected Sharing. Regards, Sabrina

Thanks for the info. I created a guest account on the windows 7 computer in order to view that shared folder from the vista one. Still couldn't work. How can I give windows 7 guest account permission from the visa one?
July 27th, 2010 7:46pm

Both computers have password to login to the system. I turned off the password protection on both computer for network sharing. Visa is able to view my shared folder without password. but I can't view vista's shared folder. I doesn't ask me a password, just saying that I don't have permission to open it. I checked that we are in the same workgroup, sharing discovery are on, file and printer sharing are on. I turned on vista's public folder sharing, so I could open some folders inside of the public folder, but some others still says I have no permission.

Please take the following steps to add the permission for the shared folder. Changing Folder Permissions ========================== 1. Right Click on the Folder you wish to restrict properties on 2. Select “Properties” 3. In the Properties window go to the Security tab and click on Edit. 4. If the Guest user account is not on the list of users or groups that have permissions defined, you should click on Add. Now you need to type the user name or the group of users for which you want to change the permissions. Type “Guest” in the names box. 5. After adding the guest account, Click Check Names and then click OK. 6. In the Security window, select the user/group you just added and then click in the first check box under Deny which is “Full Control” and then click OK. Please let us know if you need further assistance. Regards, Sabrina

I tried to add both my windows 7 user account and guest account on the vista one. it says couldn't be found. Should I choose the computer under" Location" 1st? because I can find the user account under local computer, but not from the network. If so, I can't find the other computer under "Location" only shows local one.

Give your users passwords. Blank passwords can cause this kind of problems.

If we need to give passwords to each other then what the "feature" of the "Password protection" for? Even if you turn that off, we still need to know each other's password? We don't have privacy anymore.

I did not said give passwords to each other. I said each user should not have a blank password. I faced a problem like that these days and by removing blank password password, my problem was solved. Bes sure you don't have users accounts with blank passwords on both computers.

Ok. We have passwords on each computer to login to the system, they're not blank. Vista can view my windows 7 shared folder without password, but I can't view vista's shared folder.

Ok. on his computer, under "share", the permission part says full control. under security it has 3 names "system" "Administrator/username" and "username-PC", all of them were checked under "allow" but not the "special permission"

"everyone" was default option, it's already there. I have tried to add my username-PC, but it says my name couldn't be found.

You are not able to access the shared folder even if you are using the everyone group?
August 3rd, 2010 6:56pm

I don't know what you mean. All I know is that we are in the same "WORKGROUP", and we gave full control to each other on the folder we shared. And we turned off the password protection, turned on the network discovery and public folder and folder and printer. On his vista, under "share" it says "everyone", and it's the only one there. I couldn't add my name-PC there. It says my name couldn't be found. However I can view some of his public folders.

It is perfectly normal that you can not add your name-PC there because you are working in a workgroup. To do a such thing, you should use a domain which is not possible in your case. In workgroups, users accounts are used for local use. In your case you should use the everyone group to give permissions on shares.

The everyone means every user on that one computer, or every user (every computer) in the same network?
August 10th, 2010 4:21am

This is an article about the everyone group and the anonymous group: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278259 I usually use everyone group to share folders, but if it does not work try the anonymous group. This should solve your problem. Best regards.
