Networking Windows 7 Computerswith VistaComputers
The have added a Windows 7 laptop to my home wireless network that has 2 Vista computers – one desktop (I have named it V1) and one laptop (V2). But they cannot fully access each others shared files and printers. Let me explain: V1 under “View Computers and Devices” : (Workgroup MSHOME; Network Location: MSHOME) · V1 can see and access shared files on V2 and can access printer on V2 J · V1 can see W7 and shared files but can only access ones under “Users/public”. When try to access other folders, get message: “Windows cannot access V1. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.” L V2 under “View Computers and Devices”: (Workgroup MSHOME; Network Location: MSHOME) · V2 can see V1 computer but cannot access its files – the message says: ““Windows cannot access V1. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose..” L When I click on Diagnose, I get message: “V1 is not a valid host name. Check the spelling of the name, make sure computer is on and connected to the network or contact your network administrator. Click for more info about DNS.” L · V2 does not see printers on V1. · V2 can see W7 and shared files but can only access ones under “Users/public”. When try to access other folders, get message: “Windows cannot access V1. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.” L W7 under “computer view”: (Workgroup MSHOME; Network Location: MSHOME 2; no Homegroup set up ) · shows V1 and V2 but when you try to access them I get message: “V1 not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have permission. The specified network name is invalid.” - Printers on V1 and V2 do not show up Any suggestions? Tks john Settings: V1 and V2 have: · Network Discovery – on · File sharing – on · Public Folder sharing –on · Printer sharing –on · Password protected sharing off · Media sharing – on

Hi, Please try the following possible solutions. 1. Turn off all the filewalls. 2. Check Client for Windows Networks and File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks is properly installed for Nerwork Adapter. 3. Disable SMB v2 for a test. 4. Disble NTLM v2 5. Use IP address to directly access the computer. Juke Sorry but I am a little un-familair with the terminology. By turning off firewalls, doesn't this make my computers vulnerable? What does "Check Client for Windows Networks and File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks is properly installed for Network Adapter." mean? What is SMB v2andhow does one disable it? Same q for NTLM v2? How do I find IP address? John
