Networking Vista HP with XP Pro
Hello,I am trying to network two laptops through a wireless router that is connected to a cable modem.Vista Home Premium laptop is under a workgroup name.XP Pro laptop is under a domain name. When first trying to network these two laptops, nothing happened. We changed the XP laptop's domain name to match the Vista laptop's workgroup name. The assumption here was that we'd be able to establish a network under the same workgroup. Both laptops were able to see and access each other's shared folders (eg., music, pictures, video) and the Vista laptop could see the XP laptop over the network, but the XP machine did not see the Vista machine over the network. Furthermore, we were unable to LAN in any way.Ultimately, we needed to rejoin the XP latop to the original domain network and would rather not switch it back, if possible. We'd like to keep the XP laptop in its domain the Vista laptop in its workgroup.Any information or resources would be appreciated.Cheers

Hi, I would like to confirm if the laptops can ping each other. If so, please perform the following steps: 1. Ensure that file sharing is allowed on the firewalls. 2. Add the same accounts and passwords to both laptops on your network. For example, if there are four members using the laptops, add all four accounts with their passwords to both computers. When this is done, each member can access the shared folders of the other computer, regardless of which computer they are using. 3. Access the share folder via UNC path. For example, if the IP address of the Windows XP laptop is 192.168.1.1 and you would like to access a share folder on this laptop from the Windows Vista laptop, click Start and type \\192.168.1.1\share_folder in the Start Search box on Windows Vista. If the ping fails, please temporarily turn off the firewalls to check the result. If the issue persists, please export the Windows IP Configuration by using the command ipconfig /all on both laptops for further research. Hope it helps.
