Networking Problem! Please help
Recently, a computer with Vista Home Premium was bought. We had an existing router, and existing computer running Windows XP Home Edition SP2. Much trouble has been recieved while trying to set up a file and printer sharing network. We can't seem to get the computers to communicate, but the laptop can use the internet through the network. Specs: Computers are in the same workgroup: MSHOME Computers have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled The Vista computer can see the XP computer in the network map, and ping it by IP (but not name) The XP computer can't see the Vista Computer anywhere, and cannot ping by IP or name Network discovery is on, and all necessary sharing options are also on. The XP computer appears in the Vista Computer's Network map, but is not clickable Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Hi, Thank you for posting.Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Regarding the issue that the Windows XP computer cannot ping the Windows Vista laptop, please refer to the following document: Nobody Can Ping My Computer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749323.aspx After performing the steps, please check if you can ping Windows Vista from the Windows XP computer. 2. You can try to access the computers shares with both XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX<IP Address>\folder and \\computer name\folder to see if it works. Meanwhile, please try to access: \\127.0.0.1 on your computers to see if you can see you local sharing. 3. Please ensure that all the updates have been applied on both of the computers. 4. If you enabled simple file sharing on the Windows XP computers, please check if Guest account has also been enabled. You can also disable the simple file sharing and reconfigure the sharing on the Windows XP computer 1) Click Start, then Control Panel 2) In Control Panel, double-click the Folder Options icon. 3) Under the VIEW tab, scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings 4) Remove the check from the option labeled: Use Simple File Sharing 5) Click the OK button to save changes. How to disable simple file sharing and how to set permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874 5. Please make sure that the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) has been enabled on the Windows Vista computer and the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder has been installed on the Windows XP computers. Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder (KB922120) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=4F01A31D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en 6. Temporarily disable or remove all the security software (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.) on all the computers and check if it works. May I know if there are any error messages appeared when you failed to access the share? If so, please let us know the details. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

I've done all the things you've said, and it hasn't worked. Thanks for the help, the firewall doesn't seem to do anything. ~k0re_
