Networking - Vista and 7
I have a Windows Vista desktop and a Windows 7 laptop. I have setup a wireless network and have gone through all the steps to try to share files, printers, etc. Both PC's have Network Discovery turned on and file sharing is enabled. On the Vista desktop, I can see and access the 7 laptop perfectly, but on the 7 laptop, I can not see the Vista desktop. When I click on "View Full Map" in Network and Sharing Center, the Vista desktop is there, but when I go into Computer then Network, the desktop is nowhere to be found. Any suggestions?

Hi, Please temporarily turn off firewall on each machine and access Windows Vista machine again. If the issue persists, please try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Assure the following services are started on each machine: Computer Browser, Server, Workstation 2. Refer to the following article to configure relevant settings on Windows Vista machine. File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista 3. Write down the computer name for Windows Vista. Click Start button in Windows 7 and type \\Windows Vista computer name, and then press enter. Can you access the Windows Vista computer now? Thanks, Novak

Okay, now here is the scenario. My firewall is actually managed by Norton Systemworks. I turned off the firewall on each computer, and yes, I was actually able to see and access the Vista from the 7, and vice versa. Now here is the problem, shortly after I gained access, and reengaged the firewall, I was then denied access to the Vista PC from the 7 laptop. So my next step was to modify my firewall settings and add in both IP addresses as IP addresses allowed access.Again, this worked, but for only a brief amount of time.I had read about Norton that if there are previous networking permissions set, Norton will NOT touch those. In my case, I had installed Norton prior to establishing the network set up.Would it be in my best interest to uninstall, then reinstall Norton? Are there any other suggestions anybody can offer?

I do not think Norton Systemworks is on the compatibility list. You should uninstall it.microsoft has a great firewall in win 7 and add in MSE and you have a good setup.

Yes, you can try to uninstall and reinstall Norton to reset its default settings. However, if the issue persists, you may contact Norton for further assistance to add more allowed access in Norton firewall. Thanks, Novak

Alright, it appears that Systemworks, or more specifically, Systemworks' Firewall might have been the culprit.I went ahead and uninstalled Systemsworks completely off both systems, turned on Windows Firewall and installed MSE on both systems and now my network connections are functioning perfectly.File Sharing, Printer Sharing...everything.It's even better, it means I will be saving almost $80 per year to renew Norton. The solution is functional and economic, thanks.
