Network shares not definable and Network detection and File Sharing not accessable
About a month ago I upgraded from XP to Vista on a new computer. I am using a home network of 2 XP Laptops (wireless), 3 XP desktops and 1 95 SE desktop all wired. I have been able see all the defined shares and printers across the network. Everything appeared to be working fine and I ran Vista in this environment for almost 2 weeks and suddenly I had the following problem. I can no longer see any other computer from my Vista machine under Network. I have installed the LLDT update on all XP machines and the network map on my Vista machines sees them. I can access mappings that were created on the Vista machine prior to the problem occurring. I can use the net commands to create a new mapping from the Vista machine to other machines that then shows up under Computer. All the other machine on the network see and access all shares except those on the Vista machine fine. When accessing a share on the Vista machine from another machine I am prompted for credentials but once applied access is provided. In addition the buttons under Network and Sharing Center/Network Discovery and Network and Sharing Center/File Sharing are not accessible. They are both permanently On and I am an administrator. It acts like I do not have access privileges to change them. This seems to have happened overnight without any configurationn change or software addition. Dell support sdeems to think it may have been caused by a Windows update. I have been searching for a solution without any success for about 2 weeks and would appreciate any help I can get.

Try this:If you have joined the Vista machine to a domain, remove it from that domain by adding it to a workgroup. Restart, join the domain again, restart. If you are on a workgroup, join to another workgroup other than the one you have setup, restart and join back to the original workgroup, restart.See if that helps.I came across a Trust Relationship failed issue today on our network with a new Vista machine and I had join a workgroup, log on locally after restart, then rejoin the domain, restarted and all was good again.Let us know

DACTech: Sorry but no help. I am on a home network with a workgroup so I joined another workgroup restarted, rejoinded the original workgroup and restarted again. The results are thesame: - Can't change the status of netwrok discovery - Can't change the status of file sharing - Can't see other computer in the workgroup - My wfe discovered, can't authorize previously purchased ITunes music - Can usethe commend window to map to other shares on the workgroup that then show up under Computer - No problem with Internet access - No problem accessing previously created workgroup shareson other computers - No problem accessing Vista shares from ohter computers - All the above situations exist with the firewall disabled as well I appreciate your help ***** In Addition (Late 4/27)***** I spent another hopur on the phone with Dell tech support. Although we did not get the problem resolved we did find something quite interesting. I mentioned above that I had disabled my firewall (Internet Security 2007) hoping that it might provide some answers which did not happen. Last night, with the Dell tech, we disabled my firewall and enabled the WIndows firewall. Interestingly, the Network Discovery and File sharing buttons, mentioned above, are now accessible. The "Network" window is still viod of any shares. All previously defined network shares are still availableunder "Computer". ***** In Addition (5/14)***** I spent another hour on the phone with Dell tech support last night. The result was that they can't help. I wa told that it was outside the scope of their ability. I also inquired about them getting assistance from Microsoft. This is not an option that will help. I suggested reinstalling Vista as a last resort but was told that I could do that (a lot of work!) but the problem might just reoccur. Does anyone have another idea?
