Network mapping and network drive connection
There is something I just can't figure out about networking in seven. I have a private network, a residential one with 3 computers : -1 xp sp3 named PIV in a MAISON workgroup with a TCP/IP config of 192.168.1.20/255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.254 (my router), netbios over tcp enabled, 192.168.1.1 trusted netwok in my outpost firewall, wizard sharing off, file & printer sharing on - 1 xp sp3 with the same configuration beside the tcp/ip address set to 192.168.1.40 and the name set to DELL - seven ultimate with the same configuration beside tcp/ip address set to 192.168.1.60, name G50, homegroup disabled, network discovery on, file & printer sharing on, password sharing off, connection with users accounts On the 3 computers I have the same profile and password. In seven, asking to map the network gives me : CyberSpace (my network) G50, PIV connected to the switch, then the router then the internet. No Dell. !?!?!? If I set my tcp config in seven to auto (relaying on the router DHCP), I get the same result however, I'm able to RDP to Dell or connect a network drive using it's tcp/ip address. (Sometimes using netbios doesn't work at all, I get the erorr that the computerI'm trying to reach doesn't exist.... ???) Then after some time this mapped network drive stops to be reachable even tho it is still mapped. So I used for a while network places shortcuts with the benefit of no error when loging with my laptop(G50) outside my home workgroup when I'm away from home. Then suddendly, even tho my network place is mapped and reachable, I just can't open my movies on my laptop from the Dell computer : the files are here, media player classic just can't open them through the network when audio files open just fine. I have to add that my switch is a basic netgear one with no firmware, a 5 ports 10/100 and my router is my adsl box set in router mode, with or without dhcp enabled, set to 192.168.1.254. All computers are ethernet connected. I've tried to configure them as: - 2 Xp in ethernet - my laptop in wireless mode to obtain the same result : the dell xp sp3 is never to be seen in network mapping, networks connections vanishing after some time. By the way, the two Xp see each other in a perfect way. What is the matter with networking in seven in a workgroup ?

I just can't tell. Yesterday before turning off my laptop, in network center mapping only showed me (as usual) seven and only one of my Xp boxes, always the same one. There is one that is never showed, my Dell box wich I only access by rdp. Rarely, windows put it in the foot area of mapping windows , saying that it can't add it to the mapping. Today it is simply not there when my network shares are yet on, reachable, with files usable. I can even rdp to that box using ip address only when netbios over tcp is enalbled in my tcp config.... !?!?!? in the navigation pane on the left in explorer, network part only shows my laptop (seven), when just above in my computer part I do have my 2 local drives and the 6 networks places set to the 2 Xp boxes. Go figure....

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Check if all the computers can ping each other with IP Address and computer name. 2. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all computers: 1) Go to “Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections”. 2) Right-Click on the connection and choose Properties. 3) Click “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4” in the list. 4) Click Properties, and then click Advanced. 5) On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to “WINS” tab. 6) Under NetBIOS setting, click “Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP”, and then click OK. 3. Please try the following method since a computer could not be seen: Troubleshoot problems with computers not appearing on the network map Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
