Network file sharing problem between XP Pro laptop and XP Home PC
Ihave a PC with XP Home, SP3 which I want to be able to access from my XP Pro work laptop. I used to be able to do this, however, over the past couple of years, I've had to replace my hardfile and/or reload due to errors or mechanical failure. Each time I've had to do this, it seems like my ability to access shared folders on the PC has decreased. I used to be able to access all folders on the PC, even the C drive. More recently, I could no longer access the shared C drive, but could still access one folder. However, after the most recent hardfile change, I can now only access the shared printer. More details - I can see all the shared folders on the PC, but I can't open any of them. I can ping both systems from each other, both by IP and by hostname. My guest account is enabled. I have tried booting the PC in safe mode and changing group access permissions. I've tried disabling my windows firewall on the PC. None of these change the errors I receive. I am Administrator on both systems. Netbios over TCPIP is enabled on both systems. I had a 3rd party firewall (McAfee) installed as a trial, but the trial ran out and I uninstalled. I have an XP Pro PC at work which I can access via this same work laptop. Errors are either System error 1130 - not enough server storage is available to process this command, or "\\computername\resource is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource." Any ideas? I'm pulling my hair out here.....1 person got this answerI do too

The Not enough server storage is available to process this command message is misleading. See the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Antivirus Software May Cause Event ID 2011 ' for a likely solution, specifying a value of 15 for IRPStackSize on the computer that can't be accessed. Made the registry update, but all that did is make the error ONLY be ""\\computername\resource is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource." My husband on his laptop gets the same error trying to get to the PC.

We've fixed one problem, so let's look at the remaining one. By default, XP Home Edition validates all access to its shared resources using the Guest account. There should be no need to go to Safe mode and set access permissions. You said that the Guest account is enabled. There are apparently two ways to do that, but only one of them applies to networking: open a command prompt window and type this command: net user guest /active:yes Enabling the Guest account in Control Panel > Users has no effect on networking.Boulder Computer Maven Microsoft Most Valuable Professional

I wouldn't say we'd fixed the other problem. If I net use x: \\computername\resource, I still get the "not enough server storage message", and it doesn't seem to matter what I increase the IRPStackSize value to. I did run the net user command as well, also with no change. Any other ideas?

Did you make the IRPStackSize setting (note that its name is case-sensitive) on the computer that can't be accessed and restart the computer? Boulder Computer Maven Microsoft Most Valuable Professional

I hadn't rebooted yet before, but I have since done so. Now, I also had to reboot my laptop, but it seems to work at this point. My husband is also able to access from his laptop, so maybe that did it! Thanks!
