Network file sharing password issue
Hi guys, I recently was transferring some files from my old xp machine to my new windows 7 machine over my wireless home network which worked fine. What worries me is that on my windows 7 machine I have specifically ticked password protect my files yet I was not prompted for a password. My username and password are the same on both machines, is this the reason? or does this mean that my files are vulnerable on a college network or other network? Appreciate help with this thanks

Yes having identical accounts is why you could access the files. When you are on a public network like a university it is very important when asked what type of network you're connectiong that you pick "Public". This changes the Windows firewall to block file sharing so that even if someone knows your username and password they won't have access.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience
