Network drives appear disconnected for Administrative Tasks
Example: I have several mapped network drives to shares on a 2008 R2 Server. In Explorer, I don't see a Red X on the drive, and can browse the drive contents without
any problems. I then open the Event Viewer, go to Actions/Open Saved Log. When browsing for an event log, the network drives have a red X over it.
I'm familiar with KB Article 297684. On the server
with the shares,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters\autodisconnect Decimal Value is 1440 (24 Hours)
What needs to be changed for mapped drives to always be connected for Administrative tasks?

Hi,
I would like to confirm the following details:
Can you access these mapped drives when the red X appears over them?
Did this issue only occur to the operation of opening Event Viewer?
Does this issue occur to all Windows 7 clients?
According to the knowledge base article above, have you tried to run the following command to disable
autodisconnect feature:
net config server /autodisconnect:-1
Meanwhile, if you can reproduce this problem, please use process monitor to see if you can find
something:

I can access the mapped drive when the red X appears over them. After clicking on the drive, there is a brief pause, and then the red X dissapears. I can then browse the drive.
To clarify, for non-admin tasks, a red X is never seen, and there are no problems browsing the network drive.
This issue seems to occur not only with the event viewer, but with Group Policy Preferences Shortcuts. I have a policy that creates shortcuts for software installed on network drives. The
User Configuration section of the Group Policy is being used, the "Run in logged-on user's security context" option is used, and the user DOES have the correct permissions. I still see warnings in my application event logs:
Event 4098 Source Group Policy Shortcuts "Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070002 The system cannot find the file specified.' This error
was suppressed."
If I use my example of opening event viewer, open a saved log, reconnect my network drives, the run a Group Policy Update (GPUpdate from a command prompt) my shortcuts appear and
don't get any warnings in my App log.
This issue occurs on all my Windows 7 clients.
I used the
net config server /autodisconnect:-1 on my server. When a Win7 client is restarted, the drive still shows disconnected. Howefver now, once reconnected, it doesn't disconnect until the next restart.
I haven't tried Process Monitor yet.

Hi,
According to your description, I suspect this is related to Group Policy Preference, you could refer to the following similar thread:
GPP Shortcuts using Mapped Drive Paths
You could try the workaround mentioned by Mervyn Zhang to check how it works.
Meanwhile, it is recommended to post at Group Policy forum for further help:
