Hi I am trying to find out a solution to enable remote assistance from domain network to open internet. How can we configure our network firewall which , can we do it by opening few specific ports in our firewall. We are trying to use remote assistance when remote users are not on office VPN but they are only connected to itheir home internet. Please help.

Remote Assistance runs over the top of Terminal Services technology, which means it needs to use the same port already used by Terminal Services: port 3389. For more information about using and configuring ports, see this Microsoft Knowledge Base article. Note: If the person who is being helped is behind a firewall, NAT, or ICS, Remote Assistance will still function as long as the person being helped initiates the session via Windows Messenger. However, as stated above, Remote Assistance will not work in cases when the outbound traffic from port 3389 is blocked. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457004.aspx

Hi We are using Win 7 environment and remote assistance always uses dynamic port to establish a connection between two computers. the port no is always between 50000- 65000. Is there any way to configure this application to single port which can be open in the network firewall. or is there any way to configure this application via proxy.

i'm not sure. I know you can open a range of ports in the firewall. But this prolly isnt what you'd want to do.

Hi, We can create this key if it is not exist. 1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\ 2. Right click the space area and choose DWORD(32-bit) value. 3. Type the new port number and then click OK. 4. Reboot the system. Meanwhile, youd better to check the Domain Controller site if there is anything configuration about Remote Assistance port.Kim Zhou TechNet Community Support

Hi, We can change the listening port for terminal services by editing the registry keys. Note, please backup the registry key first before editing it. 1. Start Registry Editor. 2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber 3. On the Edit menu, click Modify, and then click Decimal. 4. Type the new port number, and then click OK. 5. Quit Registry Editor. 6. Restart the computer.Kim Zhou TechNet Community Support

Hi, According to your request, the Direct Access is the best practice for you to use for resolving the issue. But, it is limited to not use the defining ports for resolving the problem. Here is two ways for you to choose: Method 1: Open the port mapping on the router. The ports used by a Remote Assistance session depend on which version of Windows is running on the two computers involved in the session. Specifically: Windows 7 to Windows 7, Windows 7 to Windows Vista, or Windows Vista to Windows Vista Dynamic ports allocated by the system in the range TCP/UDP 49152-65535 Windows 7 to Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows XP Port 3389 TCP (local/remote) In addition, the Offer RA via DCOM scenario uses port 135 (TCP). Note If you are concerned about opening the DCOM port (TCP port 135) on your corporate firewall and want to avoid doing this but still want to be able to offer Remote Assistance to remote users, you can do so by using Authenticated IPsec Bypass as described in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753463.aspx. Method 2: Use the Direct Access installed on the server and the client. Direct Access can be used for the situation that one client connect from home to Domain Network without VPN or any other conditions. Here I provided some reference for you to use: Troubleshooting DirectAccess http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd637786(WS.10).aspx DirectAccess Troubleshooting Guide http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee624056(WS.10).aspx General Methodology for Troubleshooting DirectAccess Connections http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee624058(WS.10).aspx Best Regards, Annie Gu
