Network backup using DOS XCOPY command
I didn't get any suggestions on the "I can't map a network drive from windows 7,........" thread so will try a new thread.................... When I initially purchased this new Toshiba laptop (win 7 Professional 64 bit) I could not map the network drive I have connected to my Linksys WRTSL54GS router but after several attempts I can now "see" the drive in Windows Explorer most of the time (it sometimes is not visible). I have mapped the drive and can read and write to it via Windows Explorer and DOS. Problem is when I try to use the XCOPY command in a batch file or from the command line with a "/s" or a "/e" (copy sub-directories) I get an error "Insufficient Disk Space". As long as I don't include these options it works well but I don't want to have to modify my batch file every time I and create a new sub-directory. Might also mention (not sure if it is related) but when I try to play a media file from the network drive I get an error "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file". I can copy the file to the "C" drive and play it fine. I have been thinking this a sharing problem but due to the fact I can copy using Window Explorer and DOS I am not sure. Any ideas appreciated. Hi Lenp, The issue can be caused by permission. Please make sure you have the full permission to access the network. Please disable firewall to test the issue. You also can test the XCOPY "/s" or "/e" via local Explorer. Otherwise, I suggest using robocopy instead. You can refer to the following KB to get more information. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323275 Regards, SimidaPlease remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Simida_W Thanks for the response. Tried and tried to get xcopy to work and was successful if only trying to copy one directory level. The /e and /s switches always resulted in the "insufficient disk space" error. Using robocopy seems to work very well at first glance. Will see how it works running backup every night. thanks, lenp
