Network and iPod issues
I have scratch built a computer using a gigabyte motherboard. I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 and everything has been working great until just recently. In the computer, I have an ATI Digital Cable Tuner. I had a bit of an issue recently with it, but was able to get it to work again. The problem was with the settings in Norton Internet Security 2010 I have had network issues with a couple of items. The first one is that my laptop, which is a Dell Vostro is connected to my network using wireless. It is has Windows XP with service pack 3 on it. I can connect to the Internet. I then map a network drive to my Windows 7 box and it connects and works fine. Then after a few minutes I cannot access the shared directory on the Windows 7 computer. I try a ping and I get no response to it. I then go to my Actiontec router and I'm able to ping the Windows 7 box. Eventually I can ping the Windows 7 box. It does this every once in a while. I'm not sure why this is doing this. Second issue is that I have a couple of wireless devices connected to the system. One is my TV, which I'm using a Cisco wireless Bridge. The TV is connected to the wireless bridge and it's able to access the network without an issue. I'm also able to connect to the internet with it and it works. However when I tried to ping it from the Window 7 box, I was not able to and it was giving me destination unreachable. So what I had to do was to put a static ARP entry in and it was able to ping the TV. The third issue is that I have an iPod touch, which I just picked up. I got a program that will allow me to download files to it so that I can read them. I attempted to connect to the iPod, but was unable to. I tried a ping and it told me that the destination was unreachable. I went to a Windows XP machine and had not problem connecting to the iPod. I'm sure that if I add a static ARP to Windows 7 then I will be able to connect to the iPod. I shouldn't have to do this for every wireless device that I add to the network. I am thinking that the issue is that that the ATI Digital Cable tuner is, at times, taking priority and everything is trying to go across that link. If that is the case, then how do I make the network card (192.168.x.x) be the primary card and handle all traffic except for what needs to go to the ATI card. I need some help to figure out what is up and get this solved permanently. Thanks Terry

that is very unlikely. for starters, can you post the TEXT output of ipconfig /all from that machine? http://digitalmediaphile.com/index.php/tips-tricks-how-tos/ipconfig-all-how-to-get-text-output/ You mention an Actiontec router, a Cisco wireless bridge, XP and Windows 7 and an iPod. Then you say that things were working until recently. You mention Norton. What else changed? What happens if you do a system restore to a point where things were working properly? You've got a lot of different things going on here and it would be best to start at a known good point and then make changes one at a time. "The problem was with the settings in Norton Internet Security 2010 I have had network issues with a couple of items" Dump Norton Internet Security, there are plenty of free antivirus products that do a comparable (if not better) job (AVG, Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials, etc.) http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ "Then after a few minutes I cannot access the shared directory on the Windows 7 computer. I try a ping and I get no response to it. I then go to my Actiontec router and I'm able to ping the Windows 7 box." Sounds like a) less likely, but you could be too far from your WAP, or it's having channel interferance from other close by WAP's in your area. b) your actiontec router might be on it's last leg.

Hi Terry, Since the issue first occurred recently, could you please recall which change was made before the issue first occurred? Also, please temporary disable or uninstall Norton software to see if the issue occurs. Also, disable Windows Firewall to check the result. For more information, please refer to: Turn Windows Firewall on or off Besides, you can access Clean Boot to check the issue. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, you can continue to narrow down which entry is causing the issue. If the issue persists, please collect the firewall log file by the steps below: 1. Go to Start, type cmd in the Start Search box. 2. Right click on cmd.exe and then click Run as administrator. 3. Type the following command: netsh advfirewall firewall show rule all verbose >c:\firewall.txt 4. Go to C:\ drive and then send the firewall.txt file to us. +++ For your convenience, I have created a workspace for you. You can upload the information files to the following link.
