Network Sharing on Windows 8.1 Pro

Hello,

I've been trying to connect my computer with a new server all day long. When i try connecting it gives me the error message:

"//Q is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  The specified username is invalid."

I've tried:

Creating a homegroup, couldn't do it.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Client for Microsoft Networks

Changing my Advanced Sharing Settings (Private; Network Discovery: ON, File and Printer Sharing: ON, Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections (recommended). Guest or Public; Network Discovery: ON, File and Printer Sharing: ON. All Networks; Turn on folder sharing so anyone..., 128-bit encryption: ON, Password Protected Sharing: ON).

I made the the Domain and the Username Q so i could log in easily.

I restarted before every time I wanted to connect to it, but i got the same error. The only thing I haven't tried is changing the registry, I saw an article on this fix online but didn't want to make more work for myself. I am trying to create a local server to share a file between multiple computers and keep it updated rather than moving it around with a flash drive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I feel like I've tried everything that I can.

Hi Dylan.

Lets start from the beginning, you have two computers, one is a server (computer on which you have share), and the other one is a client (computer from which you try to connect to the server/share) correct?

Do you have a workgroup, or a domain (I see that you have mentioned a domain, but just want to make sure)?

Could you please post here some info regarding your setup:

domain name:

server name:
IP address:
Subnet mask:
Gateway:

client name:

IP address:
Subnet mask:
Gateway:

Or if it is easier for you, just run IPCONFIG /ALL with PowerShell and post the results here.

They are on the same *default* work group, WORKGROUP.

Domain name: Q

server name: Q

IP: 172.16.244.61

subnet mask:  255.255.0.0

gateway: 172.16.0.1

Client: DylanFilip

IP: 172.16.128.57

subnet mask: 255.255.0.0

gateway: 172.16.0.1

Can you ping the IP address: 172.16.244.61 from your client?

open CMD and type: PING 172.16.244.61

These IP addresses, did you enter those manually or they were assigned by your router?

Yes. I can see it on the network. Pinging it did get a reply.

The IPs were assigned by my router, but i made them static.

Alright, could you check the clock on both machines and make sure those are in a same zone?

Then try again after you make changes.

They actually weren't in the same time zone; one was Pacific standard time the other was Eastern standard time. I fixed that but i still got the same error.

 Turn OFF Homegroup sharing. "Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections" and set it to "Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers"

Server OS does not support Homegroups.


Also, make sure that File and Printer Sharing is turned on in the Server, and enable the Firewall exceptions for F&PS on the server as well.

Reboot the server and try once again.

If that doesn't help, I would ask you to change one setting in Local Security Policy.

Start -> Search -> enter SECPOL.MSC

Navigate to: Local Policies > Security Options > Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level

Double click and set to be this option: Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated

Apply the changes and try again.

Key piece of information here. I missed it before. You are on a workgroup. As such, user accounts on both machines are inaccessible by the other machines. Even if they share the same username and password. It comes down to security identifiers.

On DylanFilip, map a network drive, in the format \\{servername}\{sharename} and check the Use other credentials box. When you connect, it will prompt you for the username and password on the server itself. You may need to put the username in the format {server}\{username}

Be sure to set the advanced sharing settings as below, on the SERVER - not the client. (those settings on the client are to allow other machines access to that client)

UNDER PRIVATE

File and Printer Sharing - ON

UNDER ALL NETWORKS

Public Folder Sharing - OFF (you don't need to share public docs, public pictures, etc.)

Ensure that ALL File and Printer Sharing firewall exceptions on the server are enabled for PRIVATE.

Finally, make sure the server and the client's network connections are set to PRIVATE (Home or Work) and not PUBLIC or UNKNOWN.
