Network Says Its Connected - I Can Print - But Internet Doesn't Work
I was installing a bunch of updates for Windows Vista, when my kid accidentally unplugged the computer. I'm not sure if the updates finished installing or not. When the computer was turned back on the internet was not working. It still says the connection is fine. It's sending and receiving packets, and I can print on the printer downstairs, so just the internet doesn't work. I've googled the issue, reinstalled a ton of drivers, reset the internet, changed setting, and nothing helped. I even tried installing an old ethernet card I had lying around, and that one gives me the same problem. I tried connecting using a different ethernet line on the router and I have the same problem. It must be a software issue. I tried uninstalling all the updates it had downloaded, but when I restart my computer after uninstalling them, it gives me a message that the Updates were not configured correctly, then spends about 30 minutes before Windows finally opens and the updates are reinstalled! Any idea of what to do to get my internet working again? I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium on a Compaq Presario SR5550F Thanks for reading!

Hi, You may try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Bypass the router and connect to cable modem directly with wire for a test. 2. Temporarily turn off firewall on the machine and router (If it has) and test the issue in Clean Boot. 3. Restart the computer to Safe Mode with Networking to check the result. 4. Configure the connection to obtain an IP address automatically ======================================= a. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) to Start Search bar and press "Enter". b. Right-click the network connection and click "Properties". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. c. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and click "Properties". d. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". e. Click "OK". f. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click "Properties". g. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". h. Click "OK". i. Reboot the computer. What's the result now?
