Network Problems with Server 2008
I have a mapped driver to server 2008 that is a public folder used for install programs etc. I have a shell command to connect in my startup as if I do not Windows 87 will fail completely to connect. Now I see an error message ballon but yet the server is connected but the icon is showing an error until I actually open the server folder. Seems to be a common problem with Windows clients. The server policy is for open acceess. My MVP is for the Windows Desktop Experience, i.e. Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT Remote Assistance is available for a fee. Hi, Thanks for the post! Please try temporarily disable the firewall/anti-virus software to check the result. In addition, I recommend you add the credential (your server) in your Windows 7 client. Control Panel - Credential Manager - Windows Credentials - Add a Windows Credential. Regards, Miya TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Already tried all of that. I may change the setup from a limited server to something more sophisticated. I am only using 1 server My MVP is for the Windows Desktop Experience, i.e. Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT Remote Assistance is available for a fee. Have you given this a shot? http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/68ffbe2a-09a7-4e29-859c-ca1aaf75dcd1 click the start button and type secpol.msc in the search function. Browse to "Local Policies" -> "Security Options". Now look for the entry "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and open it. Click on the dropdown menu and select "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". Apply the settings. In the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile. Try -Enable network discovery -Turn on file and print sharing -Turn off password protected sharing -Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers The other settings such as encryption I have set as use 128 bit encryption. Please check related policies. 1. Enter “gpedit.msc” in the Start Search box. 2. Open “Computer Configuration”/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Settings. 3. In the right pane, enable the following policies: Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users Also please disable the following policies. Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares

On my Windows 7 machine I see the bubble message claiming Windows cannot connect to network drives I amusing this to connect net use \\SERVER2008\public /delete net use \\SERVER2008\public /user:Administrator Now hen I open up my computer, the icon for the server is the red X while the blue bar shows the disk is partially filled which is clearly connected My MVP is for the Windows Desktop Experience, i.e. Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT Remote Assistance is available for a fee. We tested this in multiple configurations... When the OS is not using the connection it show a Red X. We have had several cases about this (when Vista was released). This is a design that will not change. Reason: The connection is not being used. You can click on it and save files to it with no problem. In normal usage situations, the client logs out and back in... In that scenario, the drive does not show Red X as it is remapping. " There is no functional problem--only a cosmetic nag.Ketan Thakkar | Microsoft Online Community Support

The HD on my machine failed so i am using a clean install and the problems are gone. Looks like a problem affecting Windows 7 emerged unexpectedly. Likely some program I was using that no longer need or possibly some old game My MVP is for the Windows Desktop Experience, i.e. Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT Remote Assistance is available for a fee.
