Network Printer Problems - Windows 7 RC
Hi! When I try to have Windows 7 automatically connect to the network printer, it says it cannot locate a suitable driver. I have downloaded the proper printer drivers for the HP4250 and I can't seem to add the HP4250 as a network printer. Windows 7 says a compatible driver cannot be found in the folder where the INI is located. I have verified that it is the correct INI for the printer. I assume this fails because the OS is not Vista. Is there a way to change the INI to trick Windows 7 into thinking it is a Vista machine? I am sure this would work if I can get it to add it properly.Any help would be appreciated. I also tried this with a color HP network printer we have with the same results. Thanks!Michael

Yes; it can't find anything...

I ranWindows updateand it showed that printer in the list it returned. It takes upwards of 10 minutes to get the list back and during that time it appears that the window is frozen but it is not. Be patient.

I have been on both the HP LaserJet 4250 and the other HP color laser. It takes a long time but eventually comes back and says that it cannot be found on Windows Update.

Just to be clear, you selected "Windows Update" on the add printer screen and waited until the list of printers was updated? I just did this and then installed the HP4250 with no problem.

You must be using Windows 7 RC1? Build 7000 did not have this issue... I could map any of the 60+ printers on my network (servedon Server 2003 print server) without issue, but not one network printer can be mappedwith Windows 7 RC1 without doing the following:Run Add printer wizard and choose to install local printer. On the screen where it shows a list of printers, click "Windows Update" Find the printer and finish the installation. Then run add printerwizard again, choosing network printer andthe installation should finish successfully since the printer driver now exists. Ionly hope they get this straightened out before RTM...I should add, this only affects adding a network printer that is shared on a print server. Mapping the network printer directly by it's IP address works fine.
May 12th, 2009 9:26pm

I downloaded the very latest release candidate via MSDN. I assume that is RC1. I am running the 64 bit if that matters.I have never done what you are suggesting. Can you clarify the screens?Add a printer (ok)Add a local printer (ok)Do I (a) use an existing port or (b) create a new port?Option (b) looks like where you are alluding to. Do I choose thetype of port as(1) Local Port or (2) Standard TCP/IP Port?If option (1), what is the Port Name?If option (2), what is the Hostname and Port name fields?I can ask my SA about this stuff, but he will be upset about Windows 7 being on his network anyway - ha! He thinks developers are rogue anyway -- this doesn't help. So I would rather understand what we are doing first...Thanks for your help!Michael

Had a similar issue on win7 64bit. Trying to install an epson as a network printer but had no 64bit drivers available, neither from epson windows update.Tried ti use the 32bit one's in compatability but no dice.So I connected the printer via usb, windows 7 then downloaded the drivers thru windows update. I disconected the printer then tried to install it as a network printer again, choose have disk, let me pick my device, choose the new usb printer drivers that were now on the list and everythings setup fine now.Hope this helps.

I know this is an older topic, but I thought I'd offer up a solution.I ran across this when using an Oce Imagistics printer and Windows 7 Enterprise x64. The problem was the existing printers on the server were using an older version of the driver. I was able to print directly via a local TCP/IP port using newer drivers for Vista. To test this theory I created a test printer with the latest drivers that printed to the same TCP/IP port. Once that was created, I was able to successfully connect to the printer. Upon further investigation I found that the manufacturer had changed the wording of the driver slightly. This was creating an issue for Windows 7when it was trying to locate the proper driver. Even trying to specify one locally didn't work.Hope that helps another frustrated person out.Digital Deviation - www.DigitalDeviation.com

Browse to the driver. I get this error: Connect to Printer Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation failed with error 0x00000214. Any ideas what this error means? I Googled it but no luck... No idea what it means, but I just got this same exact error message with my Brother HL-1450 hanging off a windows XP machine when trying to add it to my Windows 2008 desktop machine (Server R2 x64 being used as a desktop - I have my reasons!) I installed a "Phantom Printer" on a random com port with the correct driver for my printer, then I ran a command prompt as administrator (might have worked without that, dunno) and typed this: rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /if /b "Brother" /f c:\temp\BROHLA1A.INF /r "IP_192.168.0.1" /m "Brother HL-1450 BR-Script2" /Z It flashed up an error message (not sure what it was, I was about to give up at this point and try again tomorrow) but then I noticed that I had 2 printers listed in "devices and printers" (besides the XPS writer thingy) - "Brother" - and the "Phantom Printer". Test page sent to "Brother" worked a treat. Printing a web page takes a while - it "thinks" a lot (something's not optimal) but at least it works. Printing from Word works just fine though... The reason I just didn't just add a port as you did? Win2k8 told me I wasn't allowed! Grrrr!

Hi guys, Anyone able to fix this error with printing on the network? I'm having the same issues as MoFlaherty, except my printer (HP1320) is NOT a network printer, (no IP address). It is installed on a Vista Business (32bit) machine with a USB connection, it is shared, and I am trying to connect a Win7 Enterprise x64bit machine to it. It sees the printer on the network when I browse via the network but when I try to connect to it after hitting the Next buttone, I get the same error, that there was no driver found (when in fact I downloaded BOTH HP's PCL5 and 6 versions for windows 7 x64), even though I manually located the .INF file. Firewall is not on for either machines. File and print sharing is enabled on both. Windows accounts have both usernames and passwords the same, if that helps. Moflaherty is right that if the printer has an IP it connects just fine. What a pain.. Any ideas? Thanks, Philip Jealousy is not proof of love, nor proof of emotional immaturity

After installing this OS a few more times, it does seem hit or miss for me. Some printers can be added directly and others need the IP trick. This "feels" to me like the INF files need updated to handle the new OS, but I can't confirm it. We may be seeing the "OS out of the gate before the Manufacturers have caught up" issue like the long line of OSs that came before it: Vista, XP, 2000, NT, 98, 95, and, ah, Microsoft Bob (code-named ME)

@Fairlane, I ran into this same exact problem today when installing a shared (non-ip)printer from a vista 32bit to my windows 7 x64 laptop and, it took me a while to realize I had disabled windows update for drivers. Make sure you have it enabled...see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730606(WS.10).aspxBefore I did that the only option the printer dialogue gave me was to browse manually for the .inf file and I could not get that to work. After, windows found the driver and installed it. Woohoo.

I presume you are trying to connect from a 64-bit computer (eg Win7) to a printer connected to a 32-bit computer (eg XP). The solution is close at hand. On the computer to which your printer is attached (eg via USB) add additional drivers. You do this by locating the printer's icon and going into properties. There is a button for selecting additional drivers. Such as for XP64. Then go back to your 64-bit machine and add a printer. Let it locate the printer on your network. If it doesn't find it, browse for it. A window should then open informing you that the printer is being accessed to download the driver software. When it's done, a window opens with a button for printing a test page. You should be home free now.

You do realize this thread is quite old. Anyway, you cannot run a 64 bit driver on a 32 bit machine.
February 14th, 2010 5:15am

I know this thread is old but I have a question regarding it as well. I know I should probably just buy a new printer or install Windows 7 64-bit on my main machine but here's my issue. I have the hp 1315v installed on my main machine which is an old XP Pro (32 bit) home built. Everything is peachy. It is shared out and any XP machine I bring into the network can easily pick up the share and print. I now have two Windows 7 laptops, one a Toshiba 32 bit and the other is a Dell 64 bit. When I try to add the printers I get the "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation failed with error 0x00000214." I have down loaded and extracted the files from the huge EXE that HP put together for Windows 7 and it has a few INF files in it that makes me think they know what they are doing. BUT... I installed the full HP windows 7 package on the Dell 64 bit machine and it still could not find suitable drivers when I tried to connect to the main machine share. No dice. I didn't think that would work anyway but I tried it. Deleted that big monstrosity soon after. Then I looked to the XP machine and tried to add the drivers to the shared printer but anytime I pointed to the expanded INF files from the huge EXE (of course I unzipped the whole thing to their corresponding sub-directories) and XP is telling me that there are no files that match the hardware I am trying to install. Even trying to add it in the "server properties" does not work. XP Sees that I am chosing INF files to correspond to the DRV and DLL files that match other hardware but they also see that the DRV and DLLs were not written for XP and such they won't install. This is frustrating.

This does work if you add the printer locally. You just need the IP address of the printer. Add a printer Add a local printer Create a new port Standard TCP/IP Port Port Name -- put the IP address there. If the driver is not local, you should be able to get it from Windows Update. However, the Color 3600N was not in the list, but my black and white laser was. Regardless, this works. Thank you for your help. Hopefully Microsoft will get the network printer issues worked out before release... I finally got this to work on Windows 7 x64 over the network today by using this input method. I first downloaded the NEW Universal driver updated Aug 2010. I then did the manual install of the local printer. When asked for printer type I simply hit have disk and navigated to the new driver folder I just downloaded. Hit next after you find the drivers and your ready to set the port. For your port you have to go to the computer the printer is located and find out the pathway to the printer. Mine was \\MD2\HPcolorl . I submitted the new port and hit enter and it installed the printer. It hung up the computer 3/4 of the way through the process, so I restarted the computer and low and behold the printer was there after the restart. Check to make sure the driver version is the newest one you downloaded, if it is not, update the driver to the newly downloaded version. Hope this helps... After months I finally got mine to work..
