Network Printer Problem / Spooler Service
Hi, have a weird question. We have around 15 printers on site all running off the network, static IP's the usual setup. For some reason since we have upgraded the computers to Windows 7 64 bit the printers have been acting up. When trying to print from word some users get an error 'unable to print with the current print setup' or when trying to install a printer they can get 'Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed'. To resolve the problem we need to stop and start the spooler service, once this is done everything works fine but this is happening intermittantly everyday on different machines. Anyone have any ideas? We have checked the drivers on the server changing them to universal drivers, changed drivers on the machines, rebuilt machines, added admin privlidges all which do not seem to have any effect. I have tried hotfixes from MS and searched the web but am unable to find a solution. The server is 2003 and computers all run windows 7 64 bit.

Hi, I would like to verify what is the error code came with error message? Did you load 64-bit printer driver? I suggest adding a printer as a local printer to check the result. 1. Go to Devices and Printers 2. Click Add a printer 3. In the Add Printer Wizard, select Add a local printer. 4. On the Choose a printer port page, make sure that the Use an existing port option button and the recommended printer port are selected, and then click Next. 5. On the Install the printer driver page, select the printer manufacturer and model, and then click Next After that, temporary disable your security software, perform the clean boot and test the issue again. If the issue persists, check if the following KB is helpful. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=982728 More information: http://scottiestech.info/2010/09/21/how-to-fix-windows-cannot-connect-to-printer-errors-in-windows-7/ Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Hi, I have tried the hotfix but the problem still occurs. The error messages are 0x0000002 and 0x0000007e. We have installed 64bit drivers, the printers work fine most of the time but every now and again we get this problem and we have no idea what it is. The resolution is to stop and start the spooler, once this is done everything works fine but this isnt ideal. The printers are large production printers so these cannot be added locally, with the computers working the majority of the time it proves the printer is working fine the issue lies somewhere else. Any ideas what it might be? Regards Ben

If these are HP drivers, remove the CopyFiles/BIDI key from the registry on the machine sharing the queues. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-NZ/winserverprint/thread/784b35c1-405d-45be-8caf-c429f740cf8fAlan Morris Windows Printing Team

Still having problems with this and its causing major issues with the business. I need a fix ASAP if anyone can help. Symptoms are still the same, intermittant printer spooler crashes. Restart spooler and printing resumes for a while but it will end up crashing again. Server is 2003 32bit with computers running Windows 7 64bit. Drivers are all 64bit. I have run fixes KB981070-v2 & KB982728 without any luck. Does anyone have any ideas please? Is it worth upgrading the servers to 2008?
