Network Password Problem
Hey everybody, I currently have a network of about 15 computers. They are all connected to a router with a simple wep password of ("123456789") Most of them are win 7. When I try to access a networked windows 7 desktop (GRACE) from my win 7 laptop (Charlie), it asks me for a user name and password. Regardless of what I input (either a correct or incorrect username/password) it still prompts me to "Enter your network password" I have disabled password protected sharing and I've tried enabling GUEST. It's been 2 hours that I've been trying to access a network computer with no luck. What the heck is the network password? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Hi Rashyaa, I'm not sure want you mean with "access the desktop". I assume that you just want to access some shared files. There a some other threads dealing with that issue. e.g. check the solutions suggested in the following thread: Win7 to XP networking problem.... Network password? Ralf

My problem is that I just can't access the shared files... it asks me to "enter your username and password" then it asks me "enter your password" nothing is working. I've searched the world... all the answers are abysmal. it asks me "Enter your password to connect to: Grace" Under it says "Domain: Charlie-PC" so I enter MY user and password. then it asks again to "enter your password to connect to: Grace" This time the username is "Charlie-PC/Charlie" and the password is blank. So, what do I type in exactly, I'm really running out of patience with this problem.

Hi Rashyaa, because you want to connect to grace you have to use a login from grace: User name: grace\MyUser Password: Password on grace Don't try to use accounts with blank passwords because for security reasons they can't be used by default to connect to a network share. In a small network without a domain controller you usually will create the same user with the same password on all machines. Ralf

Hi Ralf, but what if I don't have a password on grace's computer? I disabled "password protected sharing" in the networking center. i created a shared account across Charlie and Grace. The account is called Shared with the password shared. I still can't get access.

Hi Rashyaa, try user name: grace\shared and password: shared If that fails: Do you still get the prompt for the network password? BTW: The most easiest way to share files on Windows 7 is to use public folder sharing in a home group. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee449421(WS.10).aspx for further information.

It does fail when I tried that username and password "\\GRACE is not accessible. You might not have permission..." ... "The specified username is invalid" No it does not prompt me for a network password. I know about Homegroups but I have a few computers running XP and vista on the network. So i'm simply trying to solve this one step at a time. Also, is it possible that my router may be causing this?

To eliminate some possibilities for this problem (share/ntfs permissions etc...) please try to use the name of the account you use to logon grace. If your user account does not have a password assign a password first. Create the same account on Charlie-PC. Logon Charlie-PC using this account and try to access the share on grace. e.g. 1.) Create user Charlie on Grace with password "MyPassword" 2.) Create user Charlie on Charlie-PC with password "MyPassword" 3.) Logon Grace interactively and create a folder share. 4.) Logon Charlie-PC interactively and try to access the shared folder on Grace. If prompted for a username/password type "grace\charlie"/"MyPassword" Some other things to verify: a) Are both computers in the same workgroup? You can check that in the System control panel. The default workgroup name changes with every new version of windows :-( b) For testing - and just for testing - turn of the firewalls and check if that helps. For security you can disconnect the internet connection while performing the test. Don't try to get annonymous access. Even if you succeed there is a security risk and furthermore a big change that it wont work with some future windows updates. Hope that helps Ralf

Ralf, I'm having the same issue. I've tried everything in your post at least 6 times and have over 8 hours trying to resolve this. Any OTHER suggestions?
