Network Map wont load in Windows 7
I cannot get the Network map to be created in Windows 7 Rc . The screen says " Windows cannot create the network map . Responses from other devices on the network are delayed or there in an incompatible router on the network . " Odd because everything else work fine . Any Ideas >?

First please check if you could access that shared components from network. If it cannot be accessed, please let us know the detail of the error message. Meantime, I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall on the host computer and check the result.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Straight from the help and support directly in Windows 7: This can occur for the following reasons: A computer or device on the network restarted during the mapping process. To fix this problem, wait for the computer or device to finish starting, and then refresh the network map by pressing F5. Your computer is connected to a wireless network and the wireless signal quality is poor or intermittent. To fix this problem, move your computer closer to the wireless router or access point. A device on the network, such as a hub or switch, is not working properly or is not compatible with the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol, which Windows uses to create the map. To fix this problem, disable the device, turn it off, or remove it from your network. Responses from other devices on the network are delayed or there is an incompatible router on the network. If responses are delayed, try waiting a few minutes and then refreshing the network map by pressing F5. If a router is incompatible, try disabling the router, turning it off, or removing it from your network.

You're sure your router supports LLTD?

That is very different, but I did have that happen to me once (the blue question mark) I'll have to check more into it.

I am having the exact same problem here. My home network has Windows Vista PCs, and one Windows 7 PC. If the Windows 7 PC is on a WIRED connection, - Windows 7 PC can display the network map - all Vista PCs can correctly display the Windows 7 PC on the map If the Windows 7 PC is on a WIRELESS connection, however, - Windows 7 PC cannot display the network map (except for 'once in a while') - other Vista PCs cannot place the Windows 7 PC on the map (show it at the bottom) My Windows 7 machine is a Toshiba T135-S1310WH. The wireless NIC is "Realtek RTL8191SE" with latest driver. Cisco WRVS4400N Wireless Router.

Looks like I found the cause of my problem. The Cisco WRVS4400N Router supports different wireless modes - "G-Only", "N-Only", "B/G-Mixed", "G/N Mixed", "B/G/N-Mixed". When I was having the problem, the mode was set to "B/G/N-Mixed" (which is what I would really like to have). When I changed to "G-Only" or "B/G-Mixed", problem disappeared!! Something different in the "B/G/N-Mixed" mode. Note that while I was having this problem, I did not experience any network connectivity issues between PCs - they could all talk to each other - it was an issue for the Network Map creation only . BTW, I have the latest FW version for the router. 2010/05/30

Thank you for your suggestions. After changing to 'G-Only' mode in my prior post, things were solved but still somewhat flaky. The next day, network map came up on the Win7 PC, but could not place the Win7 PC correctly - showed the blue question mark. The day after that (i.e. today) it was able to place things correctly on the map. This is a brand new PC with Win 7. I ran chkdsk - no issues. I am not having the issue right now, but I followed your TCP/IP reset sequence ("netsh int reset all" did not work), and rebooted. All OK. I will watch for a few days if the problem continues to show up. Network mapping functionality always seems a little flaky, even on Vista PCs, but hopefully eventually it will become very stable. It needs to be flushed out using a wide range of hardware and network configurations. When it works, I love it though (I do wish it would 'split up' the access point function in my router from the gateway function and show them separately). Note: When the Win7 PC was not placing itself correctly on the map, other PCs on the network were having difficulty placing it properly as well.
