I got the same issue going on. See my post. I so far havent got any solutions. I would think they'd have 24/7 mods working these forums.A+, N+, MCP(Windows Xp)

The homegroup facility in Windows 7 looks simple to use.The obvious choice might be to add Windows 7 to my PC instead of Vista, but I have no guarantee this will work.I never had a problem with home networking Windows XP machines, but the different versions of windows is now causing difficulties.
February 25th, 2010 11:03am

homegroup only works for windows 7 vista and XP are not supported. The networking between 7 and ALL other current OS' s works just fine, this has been answered MANY MANY times here, the "mods" do not jump in as this is a Peer to peer forum and the answer has been posted. But as I am in a good mode this a.m. I will repost the jest of it.In the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile. Try Make sure computers are the same workgroup for now (you can change it later)Enable network discoveryTurn on file and print sharingTurn off password protected sharingTurn on Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computersnow the normal sharing / user / passwords rules apply

"generic fix" ,.... no not a fix, just some setting you can change, it is just how things are done in windows 7.There is no issue with networking with 7, vista or XP.It does not matter how many posters say it does not work, what matters is it works for millions of others. Each network setup is different, some folks has unsupported or just plain flaky A/V / security suites installed, some folks just can follow "how things work"If the above has not helped then you need to start looking at YOUR system to see what the issue is with YOUR setup.

There is no issue with networking with 7, vista or XP. I've gotta chime in 'cuz I've seen you say this so many times (You've even said it to me). There is definitely something different about the way 7 does things. Maybe buggy, maybe not. I don't know, but something is different. There is plenty of proof of that. You can take a perfectly working XP network or a Vista/XP network, swap one computer with Windows 7 (Not changing anything at all with other workstations or network settings) and Win7 doesn't cooperate. Plenty of users have testified to that by posting here. Again, I'm not saying it is or isn't buggy, I'm just saying it is most definitely different. As for being system specific, some pointers as to where to look or if you know of some settings in, say Linux or on a router, that need to be changed, sharing them would be nice. Click Start, click Run..., type "cmd" and hit enter, type "work /now"

you start right here.http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspxif ANY of your gear is NOT on the list, replace it with some thing that is.To get tech support you must provide basic info.Version of windows, make / model / firmware of deviceswhat the error is and "it does not work" is not an error.Really I have no idea why it appears so many folks have problems.I get in boxes set them up ship them out and they work 99% of the time without me having to touch them again.I went today to setup three brand new Dell optiplex 780's all running windows 7 Pro.The network has a 2003 server, two linksys print servers and one HP networked printer and about five XP pro boxes and two NAS boxes. It took me and 1 helper as I do not do ANY real work) less than 2.5 hours on site to setup the boxes install the printers and map the drives and install the office manager program and Dentrix. One of the XP boxes is the XRay image server (images of teeth not harddrives) the windows 7 boxes access the image files off it.no magic needed, no special training needed. I just did what I do everytime.I do what I posted above, then I create the needed users / passwords on the XP image server.Plus the standard stuff... workgroup..static IP's... Opendns..nothing really different than with XP / Vista other than the stuff I posted above. Now I also have a buddy who works I.T. for a large company he has little issue with his windows 7 rollout,he had a issue with the MAC users on the network, not sure how he overcame that..they had three OLD machines which he could not get talking. He has XP / Vista / MAC / linux servers and a old windows 200x server used as a file storage box, I know he added a new windows 7 computer for him and new windows 7 laptop for the office manager. He called me I emailed him the same basic info I post here, he was up and running the next day.I know that reading all the post about can not get this or that working, can lead one to think "Hey it does not work..." but you must understand for everyone who post here they can not get to work, there are 1,000's who get it working, those folks will not come here and post "It works".So take those post with a grain of salt, step back look at your setup, find out what is different with it, we have folks here saying for DAYS it was windows..turns out it was kaspersky or some other off the wall / unsupported software at fault. So you need to KNOW it WORKS so you can look at your setup to find why it is not working for you.If I had a video working recorder I would record the whole thing start to finnish for you, but the dog ate it.

http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1405566 This link here was a huge help. This on tidbit was the biggest piece of my mystery. The other piece was making sure my local area connection was trusted on my bitdefender firewall. But this tidbit was what made it so I could see my other computer on windows 7 and what also did it for me on myvista box. Disable the Simple or Wizard File-Sharing Interface Windows XP Professional and all editions of Vista and Windows 7 have advanced sharing settings. When you use the advanced method, you can better control sharing using Permissions. You'll be using a similar approach among your computers, regardless of their Windows version. Here's how to disable the simple or wizard-based sharing interface: Open Computer or My Computer. Click Tools and select Folder Options. If you don't see the file menu in Vista or Windows 7, press the Alt key. Click the View tab. Scroll down and uncheck Use Sharing Wizard (in Vista or Windows 7) or Use Simple File Sharing (in XP). Click OK to save the changes A+, N+, MCP(Windows Xp)

Did you do what I posted on both pc's? You may also want to see what ports Windows 7 needs open on the firewall. I think I did that as well at one point. here are two more links that I read while on my journey. only the above is what fixe mine..but these may be useful. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/033c418b-1096-4df7-bfad-fd3d431f3cd5 http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/38361-windows-7-networking-sucks.html A+, N+, MCP(Windows Xp)

I think i've done the steps you suggestedBut did not disable the wizard for networking - reckon its there to help and since I'm struggling at the moment, thought it best not to disable the wizard.Would this make any difference?

Hi, May I know the exact error message you received when you failed to access the share folders. Please check if you can access the share folders with UNC (\\computer\folder or \\IP Address\folder). If this also fails, please let me know the error you received as well. At this time, I would like to share the following with you for your reference: Enable file and printer sharing Troubleshoot file and printer sharing Windows 7 & HomeGroup: Sharing with Windows XP, Windows Vista, and other operating systems Hope this helps. ThanksI have, I believe, tried over and over many of the solutions in the articles. For now I am trying to concentrate on getting printer sharing up and runningMy USB to PC printer is not showing on the laptop, and Windows 7 will not find it.When I had XP on PC and laptop this was very simple to do, but I have not had any luck with any of the proposed solutions

ThanksMy laptop has successfully installed the printer I cannot print to it.The problem seems to be getting the local network to work. The 'full site map' on the PC does not show the laptop (running Windows 7),whereas the laptop site map shows the PC
