Network Icons while using a Bridge Connection
I have a connection set up like this: My PC receives Internet wireless from my Router. I then use a Ethernet cable going from my PC to my Xbox, and I bridged the Ethernet and Wireless connections on my PC which enables the Xbox to receive the Internet; Router --- wireless--- PC --- ethernet --- Xbox ^------------------^ Bridged together on the PC The problem with Windows 7 is that the network tray icon seems to be confused as to what to represent. And so when My Ethernet is connected and my Xbox is switched on and logged in, I get this icon: http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/1124/30395969.jpg Where as when the My Ethernet is disconnected and/or my Xbox is switched off, I get this icon: http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/944/75233904.jpg Even though my internet is working perfectly fine. In Vista there was an option under the properties of each connection, which let the user define how they were represented in the tray. This isn't present in Windows 7. I don't understand how something like this could be over looked. It's either a horrible bug or awful design.

click the tray network icon to bring up the ConnectTo dialog. then right-click your (bridged) Wireless connection and click the Status option. in that resulting status dialog, click the Details... button. what don't you see?

Nothing in the "Network Connection Details". It's just blank, no entries under "Property" or "Value".

nope. a blank white dialog. nothing in there whatsoever. at least you get tray icons. be grateful. now bring up Task Manager and click the Networking tab. tell us about the Wireless graph you don't see there.

i would've expected to see two graphs there. one labeled Local Area, and the other labeled Wireless. oh where oh where did your wireless go? oh where oh where might it be? try looking for your wireless adapter interface in IPCONFIG /ALL. not there either? are you sure you remember having one? try typing Lost and Found in startmenu searchbar. maybe it's there.

I am getting kind of confused by your answers... Yes, I have a wireless adapter in this PC. I am using it right now. Perhaps I wasn't clear; everything is functioning correctly. The issue seems to be that the network icon in the taskbar tray gets confused because it tries to represent both the ethernet and the wireless connections. Once I delete the network bridge I get the correct wireless icon in the tray and I get two separate graphs in the task manager.

oh, I thought there might be some sort of humour there. And yea, I tried Internet Connection Sharing, though I can't get the NAT setting to Open on Xbox when using ICS.

It should be related to the network bridge. May be caused by one of the network adapters’ drivers. If you can use ICS instead of network bridge, you may get rid of this issue. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. NurGis, you go first.

No, there is no need for me to use ICS, the bridged connection works fine and is superior to ICS when using Xbox Live. Again, all the connections work fine, but the status icon in the tray is incorrect when using this kind of setup. I am pretty sure this isn't an issue solely with my system. Vista didn't have this kind of issue.
