Network Icon Shows Local Only, But I have Internet Access?
I've seen a few posts similar to this, but no real resolution yet.Starting today, both Vista PCs on my home network are showing "Local Only" on their Network Icons, but both can connect to the internet. Ran repair on my network connection with no results. Confirmed my router did not get a firmware update anytime recently. Both PCs have used the same router for over a year, and this has never happened before.Any ideas on what would cause Vista to think it has local only access, yet can connect to the internet fine?

Hey all, Pretty sure Microsoft have released incremental vista patches via windows update that have resolved the issue. Installed 11 recommended/important updates earlier today and now everything seems to be working as it should. Hope you all have an equal level of luck with this, Marc

Thanks. I downloaded about 12 updates as well, but it didn't fix my issue...at the time. It wasn't until just a few hours ago it just suddenly came back. strange

I have found a fix for this problem. It was dirving me *@#$#$% crazy!it happens because you have more then one networking controller installed so follow these steps to diagnose and resolve problemDiagnose:1)start menu>settings>network and connectionsif you see more then one networking device, you have found the problem to the PROBLEMon my computer for example I found two A) was an nVida networking controllerB) marvell networking controller(if anyone knows why one is better then the other please let me know)2) decide if you really need both of these networking controllers, i didnt , I only use one networking controller.3) if you are like me and see that one of the networking controllers has a red X by the icon you too can follor the simple fix it stepsFix it:optional1) open up the Device manager by right clicking on the computer then choice> properties>advanced settings>hardware>device manger2)scroll down to networking adapters3)right click the networking adapter that had the red X by the icon> and choice uninstall driver(this step is not necessarily needed) I followed this step becuase i dont need extra diver software on my hard drive, but if you feel that you might use the networking controller in the futrure, skip the option steps 1 though 3 (1-3).here is where each computer might change so understand that each bios menu might be alittle differnct, but ever bios menu has an option to disable sertine devices, like the extra networking card we dont need.mandatory steps4) open your bios settings and choice the configure tab> scroll down to the name of the netowrking controller that had the red X by the icon and choice disable5)restart and your done...note: to be more specic if you follow the option steps 1-3 and uninstall the drivers, that should fix the problem alone. but i found that windows will notify you repeatedly that it has found new hardware when you reboot the next time. and on some computer it will just automatically reinstall the drivers. (it might be easier for most people if someone could post a fix for this rather then directing you though your bios settings, ANYONE?)i hope this has helped you and once agian i am sorry that i couldnt go into the detail of opeining your bios up and disabling the networking controller but i hope you can find it or maybe you can post your Bios version or the name of your mother board and someone can post a reply with more specif directions. i have an ASU-SLI mother board. if you hav the same one e-mail me and i hope to send you more specif directions to disable the controller..BUT THIS DOES FIX THE PROBLEMENJOYDSW FILMSSEARCH DSW FILMS IN GOOGLE_________________________________________________________________________I did alittle more testing and found the "sleep" state resurrecting the problem. i have since disabled it in the group policy editor. NOTE: the "hybrid sleep" did not cause this problem, so if you use the sleep function a lot, just leave the "allow hybrid sleep" turned on in the power settings in the control panel. I however dont use either much at all and choice to disable both Hibernate and Sleep/Hybrid sleep.

I just got FIOS yesterday and having the same issue (which I did not have when using Verizon DSL before). Does it matter if I just leave it alone and not do anything about it? I tried you method but I did not see any 2 network controlle on my laptop. Many thanks!!

I also have FIOS with this issue. It doesn't affect my connection, so I just leave it alone.

I bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium last week and was getting "Local and Internet" until about an hour ago when after a reboot, it came up "Local Only". But I am still able to access Internet; in fact, once, for example IE is launch, it switches to "Local and Internet".

Yea...it does have something to do with the network adapters and Vista, but at this point, I just live with it. My Internet works, so I just forget about the tray icon anymore. It now is just "One of those things"... =]

Hey all, I also have the same issue and while it doesn't really mess up my connection it bugs the heck out of me. Although it might be notable that some of my games don't connect to the internet when the "globe" disappears from the lower right hand corner toolbar. This is a temporary fix that sometimes worked for a while. I don't think it will work with two network adapters though. Anyway you can give it a try.Start>Run>cmd, and hit enter.Type:"ipconfig" hit enter (obviously without the quotation marks "")After that type:"ipconfig /release"And after that type:"ipconfig /renew"Once again this is not a permanent fix by any means, and it didn't always work even then, but give it a try and see what you guys get. And at the time I'm writing this, my connection status is "Local Only." Both on my Marvell Internet Adapter, as Well as my brand new Linksys Wireless-N WMP300N PCI Adapter.Cheers!

I guess that the statement "Microsoft will fix it soon" means it will be fixed soon in evolutionary timing. 100 years or so? It is extremely annoying.

Thanks, man, this definitely helps. You can do the same thing via network center (you have to go into details to refresh and diagnose problems, simple "repair" does not work) but this is ten times faster.

hey there ive had the same problem for months now i finally found something that fixes this issue... i play world of warcraft and i had some ping issues... first try1.Enter the following command to disable auto-tuningnetsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled2.Type "regedit" in windows "run.." dialog to bring up registry menu Then find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentCo ntrolSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\ Interfaces\ There will be multiple NIC interfaces listed in there, find the one you use to connect to the internet, there will be several interfaces listed (they have long names like {7DBA6DCA-FFE8-4002-A28F-4D2B57AE8383}. Click each one, the right one will have lots of settings in it and you will see your machines IP address listed there somewhere. Right-click in the right hand pane and add a new DWORD value, name it TcpAckFrequency, then right click the entry and click Modify and assign a value of 1. You can change it back to 2 (default) at a later stage if it affects your other TCP application performance. it tells windows how many TCP packets to wait before sending ACK. if the value is 1, windows will send ACK every time it receives a TCP package."let me kno if this works for you its been 4 days and my globe has stayed strong since then... Good luck!

DsW274 - After reading your response, it got me thinking of another solution as I also had two network connections:1) Go to Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network Connections2) Select both connections3) Right click and choose "Bridge"4) Refresh your Bridge and Internet connectionsKept me from having to mess with the BIOS.Don't know what the better solution is, but thanks for getting the brain going!
