Netgear WPN111 108Mb Wireless USB Adapter
Hi, Has anyone been successful loading the drivers for the WPN111 USB Wireless adapter? The drivers seem to load OK, but the device will not "start". The Netgear utility will also not run (probably because the device won't start). Any help would be appreciated! Tim

hi i also use an netgear wpn111 adapter. the drivers load fine. but i cannot use the netgear software either.as soon as it opens, it disappears. The device can find wireless networks but as soon as i try and connect , i get unknown errors. i have test windows vista with about 5 other wireless USB adapters and thisis the only one which doesnt work. hopefully netgear should release some vista drivers, but that might take a year. seb

it think it's driver issue too. So, please wait the manufacturer to release a offical Vista driver to it. Thx!

Minne seems to work fine (with XP Pro). You have to load the software, close down, and connect the WPN111 before rebooting. I used to be plagued with the dreaded blue screen from time to time with the original software, but the latest version from the Netgear site seems to have resolved that too. I use the XP Wireless Network Connection facility rather than the Netgear. Not sure if this helps, but I have found the WPN terrific. Here in Norwich UK we have free wi-fi, and I can connect to transmitters 1-2 miles away without any trouble at all.

Sorry, hadn't spotted that this was a Vista Forum. Directed here by Google, and didn't check!

I have got this adapterto work okay on Vista RC1. I installed the 1.1 drivers from the Netgear website (adapter not plugged in)and thenshut down the machine. I plugged in the adapter and restarted windows to complete installation. At this point, although the Netgear utility loads, the adapter does not initialise. I then went to the control panel, device manager, and the WPN111 was listed as a device not working. Right click on the WPN111 icon, select update drivers, and let windows search the machine - it will find the Netgear drivers and away you go... Hope this helps! James

James, I upgraded to ultimate and did the steps you describe and when I right click on the device to update the drivers, windows cannot read the drivers under any scenario. I was eventually able to get the device to work without the NetGear WPN111 utility, but there is still a security glitch in using WEP or even if the Router is set to unsecure. The router does not assign an IP. I'm stumped at this point. Still searching for the answer...

hi Netgear has put up Drivers for the WPN111 for windows Vista. www.netgear.co.uk it is just the driver as the utility is not needed any more. it shows in task manager, that wireless usb dongle runs at 108mb without the utility.

Hindsight is 20/20 but this may help if anybody still has this problem. I just purchased this adapter from RadioShack on 2/10/2008 and the accompanyingCDonly has instructions forWindows XP and Windows 2000. I installed the software from the CD, plugged in the adapter to my computer running Windows Vista, and the adapter didn't work. I looked online and found a solution. So here it is. I hope it works. Good luck! Microsoft Vista Beta Drivers Available at http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adapters/RangeMaxAdapters/WPN111.aspx?detail=System+Requirements

Nothing works! I have tried the v2 drivers but they only corrupt vista and chkdsk deletes the drivers on startup and further corrupts vista. I have tried v1.1 drivers but it stops windows update working and sometime chkdsk is run at startup and corrupts vista but not as badly as the v2 drivers. Windows have announced the WPN111 incompatiable with vista but netgear still produce so I guess that they will try to resolve this problem. You could try the beta drivers but I am fed up of formatting and reinstalling vista so let me know if you try them and they work.

I had exactly the same problem. Made sure I had deleted all Netgear drivers and utilities first. I downloaded latest drivers from Dell for my internal card (Broadcom) and thev2.0 drivers from Netgear. Then with the device manager, uninstalled theinternal cardand removed the drivers.Next, rebooted. Installed the WPN 111 driversalong with the utility. Worked likea charm! Followed directions on the Wizard and the blue light started flashing and Vista recognized the adapter and created a connection to the router and the Internet. The Netgear utility worked right away and has continued to do so, as long as the Netgear card is in the USB slot. After this I pulled the WPN111 out of the USB slot. Then reinstalled drivers for my internal card. Rebooted. It worked right away and connected locallly and to the Internet. Finally and get this: reinserted the WPN111, and both adapters connected with different local addresses. Of course IE only uses one connection and prefers the internal card. I have a strong hunch that as long as Vista had access to an internal card through its drivers, then it refused to properly load drivers for the WPN111. But, once installed, the Netgear drivers are in like Flint and Vista seems to get along with them just fine. I also think that Netgear designed the drivers for Vista computers that did not come with internal cards, figuring that they would not be used anymore. However, some internal cards, and the Dell 1505n card, in particular, do not make stable connections with some routers (WPN824 in my case). The WPN111 sticks like glue to my router under all conditions, distance and speed. The internal card works great at most open sites. So I really like having use of both. Hope this helps.

Just installed a new WPN111 2.0 in Vista. Ran the Netgear Setup Wizard and followed instructions to let it install the h/w. It worked the first time but not without bugs.1. The install screen only allowed unsecured installation. The WEP/WPA encription had to be configured after the SmartWizard is installed. This caused some confusion and created two copies of my network in the scan (more on that below).2. When the PC was rebooted, the WPN111 didn't automatically connect. The Netgear SmartWizard first showed up minimized with the green radio icon on the taskbar, then just the red icon on the corner toolbar. When clicking on the icon, "invalid filename" flashed twice before the SmartWizard would open. Site scan didn't detect the network. Had to click on the PC icon and went into ConnectToANetwork, where my network showed up both as VirtualProfile(secured) and as UnnamedProfile(unsecured). Selected VirtualProfile, input the SSID, and "connect anyway" which prompted another "invalid filename" and "failed to connect" messages but it connected. Now each time the PC is rebooted, the same procedure has to be repeated to manually connect. But once it's up, the WPN111 seems to stay connected fine with good range.3. In #2 above, I actually tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Netgear s/w. But after a few iterations, the Setup Wizard wouldn't install the h/w anymore; it just looped and then stopped. Another thing was that switching the USB port from where the WPN111 was first installed seemed to mess up both the reinstallation and Vista (a peek in the registry confirmed that uninstall still left intact some WPN111-specific values), such that at one time the PC beeped and wouldn't boot with the WPN111 plugged in. Had to restore to the point before, which may be the cause for the "invalid filename" message.4. In the DeviceManager, the WPN111 driver is listed as version 2.1.0.26, which is identified with WG111T according to the Netgear site.

I have 2 WPN111 adaptors. I can install either unit on a Windows XP machine and it will work flawlessly. Whichever adaptor I install on Vista will fail the same way. The unit will connect to the router, get an IP address and appear to work fine for a short time. The unit will NOT utilize the 108Mbs capability. If I start a large file transfer (>500MB) the adaptor will lock up. A command prompt window flashes on and off on the screen but it goes away too fast for me to see what is says. To fix the problem I must let the unit cool (~15 minutes) and reboot the computer.I am using the latest driver/firmware available from the Netgear site. In fact, without that software I could not get the adaptor to run or connect to the router from the Vista machine at all.The one WG111T adaptor I have works flawlessly on both XP and Vista so I recommend that you exchange your adaptor if possible.I have NOT yet installed Vista SP1 so I don't know if that will fix the problem.

Download the latest drivers from the Netgear website. http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d103171.asp Right click on the driver file and go to PROPERTIES. In the properties window, click on the tab COMPATIBILITY. In the compatibility tab, puta check next to Run in compatibility mode for and choose the OS as windows XP. Apply and close the properties. Then again right click the driver. Click RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR. Then continue with the installation. It will be fixed.

Hi Now this might not be the solution to the issue about but for anyone that has Windows7 and keeps having the Netgear Wizard appear each time you startup - and then you have to manually configure net access each time. download http://www.windowsstartup.com/ and turnoff WPN111.exe from starting each time you start. apply and reboot bosh, job done!
