Netbooks
Hi all, I'm planning on getting an Advent 4213 netbook from Curry's in the UK. It's based on Intel Atom N270 (1.6Ghz 533FSB) with 1Gb Ram (though i thinki'll up this to 2 at some point) 160Gb HDD - http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1017899876.1232759214@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfdadegfgghdffcflgceggdhhmdgmj.0&page=Product&fm=1&sm=2&tm=undefined&sku=454072&category_oid= The primary reason for me getting this netbook is that I spend a fair amount of time travelling on trains to and from work, so would use it for movies, music but will also be able to maintain website do email etc. I'm just wandering if anyone has put windows 7 onto a netbook, if so how they're finding it, as i may do so myself. Cheers, Matt

I haven't any personal experience with Netbooks, but given the system specifications I'd expect it to run just fine on Windows 7 (although 2 GB RAM might be recommended).

Like Frop said, based on the current specs for Windows 7, it will run. But what the specs for the final version of Windows 7 are currently unknown, so no one can guarantee that it will run on it.

I would second that. As my signature says, my desktop machine is an Athlon 64 3000+ (which is clocked at 2 GHz) with 1 GB of RAM, with Windows 7 running on an 80 GB drive. Granted, the Atom processor is not an Athlon, but it is newer and I would guess it's advanced enough to handle Windows 7 for the things that a Netbook would be used for. Win7 runs beautifully on my Athlon, even with only 1 GB of RAM. I would say go for it. If nothing else, you could always restore the computer to its out of the box OS (assuming it has one) if Win7 should prove to be too slow or even unusable. If you decide to do it with the BETA, it can also be an experiment. If no one else has installed it on a Netbook, you could be the first! Heheh Just my thoughts.Main computer: HP Pavilion DV9000 - MS Windows Vista Home Premium: 64-bit. It would be in Microsoft's best interest if they decided to release an official Tiny7 eventually. ;-)

Wow, you just took me back to Windows 95 and Windows 98... When you could pick and choose what parts of the OS (to some extent) you could choose during installation. I used to make it a game, seeing how small an installation of 98 I could make. Heheh Maybe your idea wouldn't be that far off that, depending on what they do with Win7.Main computer: HP Pavilion DV9000 - MS Windows Vista Home Premium: 64-bit. You took me back even further to MS-DOS 6.0-6.22. I would be endlessly altering my autoexec.bat/config.sys and running memmaker /c /p to get as much of those 640 KBs free as possible. Games (and ironically even those running on DOS/4GW) were rather picky about the amount of basic memory available to them.

How about going back to DOS 1.0 on an IBM PC1 with 64k RAM.Back to the original question.I am running an Acer One Netbook with dual boot of XP and Win 7. No problems whatsoever.Basically the same machine as described above.D i c k MillerHot Springs Village, AR.

I've been running Windows 7 on an MSI Wind U100 (intel Atom, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD) since the beta became available. Originally I placed it on a 30GB partition for a dual boot with the netbook's original Windows XP, but after only a couple of days I was so satisfied with perormance and stability that I recreated a single partition and reinstalled Windows 7 as the sole operating system.I havn't done any scientific measurements, but 7 FEELS snappier than XP on this netbook. I can only hope that the final release is not more bloated compared to the beta. The only issues I had were getting gadgets to work with UAC turned all the way down and setting up my Windows Mobile 5 Mitac Mio A701. For both of these issues fixes were readily available on this forum (and I understand that already Windows Update takes care of the Windows Mobile Device Center matter).Otherwise, I've been gradually building up the system with all my regular apps and boot time still seems quicker than XP.I'm still hesitating a bit to eliminate Vista Home Premium from my main work computer (a Toshiba P300 Laptop with intel Centrino, 3GB RAM, 300GB HDD), currently set to dual boot with 7, but I can't see that day being too far off.If only now Microsoft could bring back the classic start menu...

Where did you get drivers for your Aspire One? All I found was XP drivers that didn't seem to want to work on Windows 7... Thanks! Rusty

i put windows 7 on my laptop and i've got an acer dual core 2.0ghz processor and 2gb 666mhz ram still sluggish and not surprized that it will crash soon, although i like windows 7 it still just a beta version so i wouldn't get to attached to installing it just right yet.

I ran the RC on My MSI Wind U100 for a couple of Months. For the most part, it worked but the drivers for the Multi card reader became problematic. I also had a few issues with the speed of copying files. I am not sure if this was an issue with the RC that were resolved but I'd like to know if any were fixed because overall, I am very happy with the new OS and how it performs on a netbook. -John
