NetBios is slow on Vista machines...
Hi, I've been dealing with this for months but cant take it anymore! I have 3 machines running Vista (1 x Busniess, 2 x Ultimate). I also have a Windows 2003 R2 Server (Enterprise) that is a DC and file server. 2 of the 3 Vista machines were running XP in the past and never had any problems. The only one to be upgraded from XP is themachine with Vista Business. These machines run applications, surf the internet, copy files between themselves very fast. However, when I try to put a file or take a file from the Windows 2003 Server ANY file copy will take HOURS to DAYS to complete. Vista <> Vista = FAST Vista <> Server= SLOW Server <> Vista = SLOW Vista <> XP = FAST XP <> Server = FAST This seems to be ONLY related to opening shared folders or copying files from shared folders... I guess that would be NetBIOS??? If I do a port based file transfer like FTP, HTTP, etc from the Vista machines to or from the server it goes blazing fast!!!!!!!! I am also a network engineer and know about speed/duplex settings and such. The machines are connected via a Cisco Catalyst switch and the port counters show 0 (ZERO) errors!!!! ping times are also very low, almost no latencey. I've tried 100Mb Ethernet, 1Gb Ethernet, same result. I've looked at event logs (on the server side)- nothing. At this point I have no idea if this is a Vista issue or a Windows Server issue! Please help!!!!!!!!! I can not take this anymore!!!!!!! I can not be the only one with this problem. P.S. Out of frustration I also did a CLEAN install of Windows 2003 on the Server and get the same result of extremely slow NetBIOS.

Hi, Thank you for your post. Please try the following steps to resolve the issue: ============== 1. Please check if the symptom is similar to the one described in the following KB:http://support.microsoft.com/?id=931770http://support.microsoft.com/?id=932170 If the symptom is similar to the KB931770, please request the hotfix through the following link:https://support.microsoft.com/contactus2/emailcontact.aspx?scid=sw;en;1410&WS=hotfix 2. Please update the network adapter driver on both Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista machines. 4. Great! Thank you for your reply. I am reviewing it now. Question: Do I apply all of these fixes / driver updates first and then try file copy's or shall I do one at a time, test, document, report? If so, do I go in the order that you listed, or start with driver updates and work my way to hot-fixes? After I posted this message I continued to read some other posts and saw there was a hotfix - KB931770 which I requested and applied. I see that this is at the top of your list too. This has improved my issue but has not totally fixed it. Meaning, files copy faster, browsing folders is faster, but my XP machines still move from folder to folder and copy the same filesmuch much quicker than my Vista machines. Thank you,Jason. Dane

Hi,Thank you for your response.Yes, you can perform those steps (step 1. to step 4.) at the same time. However, please note that the speed of transferring data between the Windows Vista machine and the Windows Server machine might be different from that between your Windows XP machine and the Windows Server machine, since their hardware, drivers and system requirement are not the same. If possible, please temporarily unisntall the anit-virus and firewall software on the Windows Vista computer and check the speed again. Small different should be a normal behavior. Have a nice weekend. Sincerely,Joson ZhouMicrosoft Online Community Support

Just an update - After applying that first patch and updating the NIC drivers (new drivers are just a little over a week old), this seemed to really improve how things worked. The Vista 'stability' updates were already installed. There is still some laggyness and hangs at places, but Vista shocks itself back to life and finishes the job. Now, on my way to the XP forum for a different issue. Thank you, Jason! Dane
